I've Been Sick... Plus Short Fiction

in #fiction6 years ago (edited)

So the past couple of days has seen me succumb to malaria once again, the second time in about two months. I have so many stories I wish to write, but neither the inspiration nor energy to go through the process. I've only scrolled through my feed a few times wishing I could will myself to do more than that.

Anyway, I'm feeling a lil bit better tonight, after being forced into taking drugs (oh how I hate em!). So hopefully I would be able to do something tomorrow. At least right now I think imma give it a shot.

For the current time, enjoy this short bit of fiction...

Childhood Hearts...

Ted had a faraway look in his eyes as he watched the entry point for arrivals. He was expectant but as he watched he couldn't help his thoughts drifting a bit.
Of course most of those thoughts still hovered around Anna. She was his world, the one part of him he couldn't let go of. He remembered every bit of how she had looked and smelt that morning she had left. Her flowered blue dress, the dusty looking shoes she so much loved, the flowers on her hair, and her constant golden smile; they were all etched onto his memory. He smiled a bit as he recalled her words of assurance that day.

"Don't you worry, it'll only be a week" she had said.

Then she had whispered mischeviously in his ears; "Mum despises hot weather, and I've heard that Africa is quite the oven". And she had winked at him. He smiled again, such confidence from a fourteen year old.

Then a week later the call had come through to his parents; there had been a tragedy and Anna had lost her mum. Also her dad was planning on assuming the world health organization role full time too. There was some talk of closure and other big words between his parents but Ted didn't hear all of that. The message he had gotten was that Anna wasn't coming back, not anytime soon anyway.

That day he had cried his heart out. His mum had tried to console him to no effect. And it was only his dad's words that eventually got to him.

"You could wish her back", he had said.

"But wishes don't come true" had been his tear filled response. Then his dad had sat down on the floor next to him, and had uttered those words which were to become his creed in the years to come...

"Son," he had said, "The nearest star to us is 4.25 light years away, that's why wishes take at least nine years to come true, but they do come true eventually. You could wish her back son, but you would have to be patient."

All that was nine years ago now, and Ted had been patient. Soon he was going to see his Anna again. But until then, he would be at this train station every day at 2pm, watching the arrivals...

THE END

Get better soon. I loved this way of explaining patience. It's difficult for me to be patient but it's worth it to try and be better about it.
