Would You Madam and Steve it?

in #fiction8 years ago

Steve walked over to where the apple had fallen and picked it up. It was a beautifully shiny apple. He wasn't very fond of apples but this one was very beguiling. He hesitated, almost ready to bite into it when his father's words spoke loudly from memory. That tree only has bad fruit, you must never eat it
"Oh well," he said out loud. "Pa is mostly right about everything." He made to throw it over the nearby fence.
"Hey hey hey!" Cried a voice, he recognised it for Stan, their slightly creepy downstairs neighbour. Sure enough, Stan hove into view from the side of the house. "That's a fine looking apple you go there, surely you ain't gonna waste it?"
"Oh hi Stan, I dunno. Pa always said to never eat from this tree? The fruit is bad or sum'tin."
"Oh toosh now Steve boy! This tree has been here almost as long as I have and its apples are fresh and damned tasty, it's a good lookin fruit ain't it?"
"Well Stan I guess, I mean it looks awfully nice."
"Oh you betcha it be nice. Go on, take a bite."

Steve stepped back a little, something in Stan's manner discomfiting him. He seemed so eager, all hunched forward and somehow different from the normal balding old man that lived downstairs. Just then he heard a barking from out front. "Aw shoot, it's time to walk Madam." He thought of throwing the apple away again but faltered under Stan unrelenting stare. He offered it out to him. If it's so tasty you want it, Stan?"
"Nah." Stan deflated somewhat. "You better go walk that dog o' yours, she sounds desperate." Stan turned and started walking away crouched and crablike in his advanced years.
Steve too walked away from the apple tree and headed toward the front yard where he could hear his french bulldog barking away, Madam by name and Madam by nature he thought. He quickened his pace. Pa always got mad when Madam pooped on the lawn.

As he angled into the front yard he noticed he still had the apple in his hand. Damn, it was a tasty looking apple. What the heck, lifting it to his mouth he took a great big bite. Mmm, damn, that was good. He had another bite and was chewing enthusiastically as he got to the stump where Madam was tied. "Hey Madam, fancy a bite?"
Madam looked at him reproachfully as she sniffed his outstretched hand. Then in the nature of dogs everywhere chomped and slobbered the rest of the apple down. It was a delightfully sunny day in Arcadia Lane but for a moment Steve felt a chill.

He had almost gotten Madam to the gate, she was doing her silly dog dance that meant she didn't have long before the poop was coming. Steve hoped he would make it to the park in time when he heard the front door of his home slam open. He jerked around, his back to the gate.
"STEVE!" His father thundered, pointing angrily. "YOU GOTTA GO!"
"I'm going pa, just about to leave."
"NOW Steve! Git going."
Steve backed up and twisted his way around the gate with Madam. He hated his Pa when he had a temper on. Best get to the park and quick.
"GO!" His father roared once more "Before that damn dog poops everywhere."
