Sleep Tight

in #fiction8 years ago

'Read me a story Mummy?' Her daughter pleaded as she was tucked up for the night. 'Please?'
'Of course little one.'

Her daughter was looking very sleepy, on the cusp of nodding off. Mummy rummaged below the bed for a suitable book. There were none there. Dammit. She didn't want her daughter to get agitated at her not being able to find a story, who knows how long she would be stuck up here if that happened? No, no books. She sighed, already her daughter was wriggling.

'Mummy, read me stooreeeeee.'

She swallowed hard, fighting back a sob.

'Ok darling relax, remember its night time. Sleepy time. Nice and relaxed. Here is your story.'

Once upon a time there was a young girl and she was finding it difficult to fall asleep one night. His mummy, who was a very good mummy decided to tell her a story.

The little girl lay in bed whilst her mummy told her the story of a little girl who was lying in her bed falling asleep. The story had barely got started when she fell asleep

Mummy sighed heavily and looked down at the empty bed.

'But why did it have to be you my darling?'

Sort:

I didn't get the ending. Why was the bed empty? Was mother having a retrospective daydream about a dead daughter?

That was my thinking!

poor woman.
