The Beautiful Conductor A Fiction (short story)....Part 2

"Oleee Olori Buruku," a woman in the crowd shouted, a Yoruba word used to describe criminals. At this point the picture was getting vague. Could the young beautiful girl at the bus stop have been a thief? How could that happen. Where is the bus she boarded? "She was unlucky today. They abandoned her and ran away," shouted a voice in the chaotic crowd which continued to increase in size.

Shortly, some group of young men emerged from a nearby motor park. "Agbero people are here," muttered an elderly woman, who was looking rather pitiful on the unclad young woman thief. "Agbero" a name given to motor park touts, whose unrivaled notoriety makes most people despise them and abhor them at same time. "Please cover her up with a wrapper" pleaded the elderly woman. At this point, the beautiful lady in question was squatting.

She was obviously shy. Using her two hands to cover her dangling breasts. " A big shame to you," shouted a man by her side. " Everyday for the thief but one day for the owner of the house; your cup is full today," continued the man. "Where are your gang members now, they have abandoned you to your fate?" he asked rhetorically.

A woman was by her side just shouting thank you Jesus, thank you Jesus. Now, Mrs Anjo was getting impatient. "What happened?" she asked the unclad lady. "Was it not you that was beckoning on me to board a bus with you a while ago?" she continued. The lady lifted up her face as if her head was too heavy for her neck. "Madam please" she muttered apologetically. "Please what. What happened to you?"

"Madam do you know her?" asked a man by the side referring to Mrs Anjo. Eric sensing danger pulled back Mrs Anjo. "Please let us go. This girl is a thief cant you get it" said Eric. This woman may be one of them ohhh, a young man dashed at Mrs Anjo. "You are one of them." shouted another young man. The story was beginning to change! Mrs Anjo quickly shouted defensively that she did not know the lady thief. "She nearly fell victim to them in another bus stop earlier," Eric explained. She almost entered their bus some minutes back in another bus stop" Eric continued as if the first explanation was insufficient.

A woman took a wrapper and covered the lady thief. "What is your name?" asked another woman by her side. "Funke" the young lady muted. "Why do you want to ruin your life" the woman inquired. "Please Ma, I do not know those people, help me." muted the lady thief. Hardly had she finished that statement before one of the Agbero boys gave her a sensational slap and she fell sideways. "Burn her! Burn her! Where is tire?" the group of Agberos chorused. One of them pulled off the wrapper she used to cover herself.

"Open your legs, Remove your hands" one of the Agberos instructed. "Take it easy my children. Take it easy," pleaded an old woman by her side. Another young man hit her head with a belt studded with an iron clip. At this time, the thief shrieked in pain and fell down. "Open your legs," another Agbero shouted. "What are you covering?"he continued. Most of the elderly women sensing that the situation was getting out of their control pulled back leaving the Agberos to do what they know how to do best.

Two of the Agberos held the lady's legs forcing her to open her legs while she resisted. They beat her with anything they could lay their hands on. Sexually molesting her in the open with some people feeling cool and taking videos and pictures with their cell phones. "Sacrillege !" shouted one old woman. "How can a young woman ruin her life in this manner?" she asked rhetorically.

The woman who was shouting thank you Jesus, stood up and approached Mrs Anjo. "Madam, you were asking what that lady did?" she asked Mrs Anjo. "This lady and her gang members at large now picked up my friend here in Oshodi bus stop yesterday. They were to drop her at Cele bus stop but alas when they got there, they veered off the route, took her to an abandoned property, collected all that she had on her and attempted a rape if not for the intervention of a passerby whom they saw and ran away including this thief.This morning, they came to this bus stop planning to continue their trade but when my friend sighted this lady, she recognized her and held her while shouting. The other gang members immediately zoomed off. The lady thief was not quick to jump into the bus." The lady narrated.

"Terrible! Terrible!" Shouted Mrs Anjo. "I nearly entered that bus if not that Eric showed up." Mrs Anjo muttered to herself. "Let us go Eric. God saved me today." instructed Mrs Anjo. Shortly after, a police pick up van pulled up with a blaring siren. Eric made a dash to the car where Mrs Anjo was already sitting down. The police shot two times in the air and the Agberos scampered for safety. They took the lady who was lying on the ground into their pick up vehicle and zoomed off.

Eric drove slowly shaking his head. "What is it?" queried Mrs Anjo. Not that she was not perplexed herself but she was curious to know what Eric felt about the whole event. "Horrible! Unimaginable to believe that such beautiful girl could be a thief," Eric whispered to himself. "Can I ever get a wife? My distrust over women is increasing by day" Eric concluded.This is a complete gang of thieves. "Do you remember the man on a wheel chair?" Eric inquired.
