The classical method
From a long time, people can read read in your mind by seeing and decrypting signal in your comportment in particular in gesture.
By example when you ask someone a question and the person is lying to you, conscientiously or not based on his reaction that is often a voice or a gesture it is possible to know if the person is lying to you or not and by this way knowing the real answers to the question you asked him.
Poker player or cops are often good at doing this because they have learned and practiced a lot. But non-trained person like most of us can use this method and use it most of time subconsciously to see if a person is lying or if he's honest. Because we use this method most of time subconsciously, our output is subconscious.
The technological method
By measuring patient brain activity via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while showing image or text, scientist where able to create links between input given like images or words showed and magnetic activity produced by the patient brain and by this way know what thoughts and images are going on the brain.
So actually, scientist are able to read in minds by measuring brain activity. With time and technologies such as machine learning that can already process to awesome recognition based on input/output, this method will be more and more precise.
It's just a time and/or money question about when scientist will be able to perfectly reproduce thought, but for now it's actually working pretty well with toughs such as text and images.
For now, scientist have an enough advanced technology to read thoughts by placing sensors on people head. The question we can ask is how much time and/or money will it take to permit them to be able to do this process from a longer distance.
We're pretty good at detecting magnetic/wave activity, most of our technologies use this process. From the longest wavelength like sound (micro) to the shortest like light(camera), passing by wifi, thermal camera and much more we can already detect nearly all frequency range within a good precision, so the question is more how much money will it take to for some people to be able to read in people mind from a longer distance ? Or can a powerful organization have already secretly developed this technology ? Is this process reversely possible in order to influence thought?
What is sure, is that we are technologically very near to be able to do theses process and also if technology such as that but with a longer measuring process will/is existing, the technology would need to be hidden or would make a very big scandal !.
Is it good to continue working on theses kind of technologies ?

Is it good to continue working on these kinds of technologies? Unequivocally yes it is. It will allow us to gain a better understanding of how the brain functions and this increase in basic understanding can serve as the frame work for helping people with psychological diseases, perhaps neurological diseases. The pathways of the brain may seem pretty well mapped out, but in reality that map is pretty damn smudgy. I think technologies like this will prove to be a huge net benefit in the long term.
