The Flash Season 4 Episode 3: ‘Luck be a lady’ Review
Was that Luck… or science?
And that’s the big question of this week’s episode. Team Flash goes against a villain like none they have ever met before, in the person of Rebecca ‘Becky’ Sharpe, or as Cisco abruptly names her, Hazard, amidst a string of highly unfortunate and really funny (sorry, guys!) incidents both at home and work. I mean, Barry being tripped by rolling marbles? Hilarious!
However, it all seems much less funny when Becky inadvertently and indifferently almost destroys Central City, and Team Flash can literally do nothing to stop her or save the city. In fact, they could barely save themselves. As the Thinker puts it, Rebecca, in her own way, could be the most powerful of the 12 metahumans he’s seeking. Why? Because she always gets what she wants and that, of course, includes not having anyone catch her. Plus her abilities are highly capricious –even she herself doesn’t know how they work, just that good things just kept happening to her. While that in itself isn’t bad (who on Earth wouldn’t want such an ability?!), the side-effect is a corresponding increase in bad luck for those who happen to be around her, in a range that depends on the amount of good luck she’s experiencing. Barry finally succeeds in arresting her when the particle accelerator explodes again (without particles this time, thank God!) and releases a charge that temporarily disrupts her abilities. Sorry, Hazard, but phew! The bad luck going around had gone from slightly ridiculous, to seriously life threatening.
It did make for a highly amusing episode though. I can’t make my mind up on which was the funniest: The grimace on the pilot’s face when his assistant asked the goose question (you just had to ask!), Barry’s handcuffing himself (how is that even possible?!), or Iris arranging for Barry to wed her at once and without any planning, only for the priest to come down with cinnamon allergies. Like, cinnamon of all things!
It wasn’t all just funny scenes, though. We did get a few important details from the episode.
First, the Thinker. We learn that he had been watching his targets for a while, even before their transformation into metahumans, and had chosen them carefully. How exactly he manipulated them to be in the bus though, that still stymies me.
Then, the bus. It turns out that city bus we glimpsed in the premiere when Barry emerged from the speed force is dreadfully important, as that’s where all the new metahumans got their powers… from Barry himself.
And Harry’s back! Way cool! Especially when he realizes how someone must’ve manipulated the ongoing events.
And lastly, Wally leaves. Well, we knew this was coming, but (sniffs) goodbye Wally. Hope Kid Flash does great in Blue Valley, but we’ll miss your youthful enthusiasm on the show.
