Sci-Fi Scene: White Cat

in #fiction9 years ago

The white cat had spent the conversation draped around the keeper’s shoulders like a softly breathing scarf. Now it turned its violet eyes away and I understood my hearing was at an end. It stood and stretched, yawning with casual disregard for the urgency of my request. Then it stroked its tail across the man’s bald head and stalked down the arm he held out for it.

"Your application is denied," the keeper said and nodded towards the door through which I had arrived.

I did not object but neither did I move. I simply stood in place and stared at the animal. It must have appeared an act of defiance, or more likely that I had nowhere left to turn.

The cat crossed the wooden desk and leaped down to the floor. As it landed it flickered and seemed to concertina, it’s front half frozen, it’s back half continuing into the same space. It yowled, twisted and rolled over, then leapt high off the ground before landing back on its feet, hissing.

A deep rumble sounded from the direction of the pyramids. A second. The walls of the embassy shook and in some nearby room a child screamed. Then quiet. A faint mist of plaster dust drifted down from the ceiling.

The keeper crossed to the window and I followed. Far across the parklands a cloud of orange smoke was rising from the upper stories of Rigel.

"Another attack on the projectors. From inside the pyramid this time," said the keeper and turned back to the cat for confirmation.

I had never heard a cat speak before; the rules of status do not allow it. But it spoke now, this white creature, and when it did, it’s voice was my own.

"Perhaps we might find a use for you after all."

I was in.

A scene, 305 words, written at vague points across the day while I was doing other things. It's a response to the freewrite prompt "white cat" which can be found here:

Ohh, I'm sorry I missed this two weeks ago - now it's too late to resteem and upvote. You write well! Great imagination!
(So I hesitate to point it out, but "it's" is incorrect for possessive; the dog lost its tail, not it's tail, now it's running around without a tail)

Thank you Carol! I will be writing more in 2018, according to my list of resolutions. A list which I haven't yet written. There will definitely be some more sci-fi.

And thanks for pointing out my mistake! Unfortunately it's after seven days and I can't change it, so it will remain on the blockchain until the end of time.

Beutiful white cat.. Is that the real colour eyes of cat??

Only in sci-fi! I had to colour them in. Originally they were green ....
