Let's Review: A Quiet Place

Sound of Silence

A Quiet Place is written, directed and also stars John Krasinski. It's his first attempt at directing a Horror Movie and by God is it a great start.

A Quiet Place's premise is fairly simple. The world has been overrun by monsters. These Monsters are blind and react only to sound. The movie follows a small family as they try to make it through life in a completely silent world. The movie has barely any dialogue and instead focuses heavily on sign language and subtitles.

I'll start off by explaining all the things I loved about this movie, which is, honestly, most of it.

The pros:
This movie had great acting. Everyone, including the children actors, did a phenomenal performance.
The premise, while somewhat simple, is more importantly rather original. I haven't seen any film quite like this one and honestly, I'm thankful for it.
This film is tense. Like, nail bitingly tense. Once this film kicks off and gets going it does. not. stop. While it may not be the most terrifying movie I've ever seen, it's definitely one of the more intense films.
The movie had a great score. The composer, Marco Beltrami did a fantastic job with the music.
The monsters we see in this film are awesome. Fast, scary and all around cool looking. They are hidden for quite a lot of the movie but the parts where you do see them they're the center of attention and are, understandably, quite horrifying and dangerous looking.
Good direction and cinematography. Not much more to say with that. The directing was great, camera work was fantastic and all around no complaints with how it was shot and directed.
As I said, when the movie starts it doesn't stop. It's pacing is awesome.

Just LOOK at how much intrigue and questions you can ask from just this shot ALONE. The notes all over the walls, the newspaper clippings. It raises so many questions and gets you all the more interested in finding out WHAT the monsters are.

My two issues with the movie are rather minor, if anything not really much of an issue at all, simply a personal preference that some may also dislike.
The use of CGI can be a little blah at points, a few shots of the Monsters looking a little poor, but not awful. Simply a little below standard. Special effects are also over relied on a little for the Monster, not too many practical monster effects, if any at all.
There's also a few jumpscares here and there but not all that many, though they are built up to and all done pretty well. More a pointer for those who dislike Jumpscares with a passion.

All in all, A Quiet Place is a fantastic horror movie and a great movie in general. It's an easy 9/10 for me and I highly recommend any fans of the genre go out and see this movie.
