A Jeezzle Book Review: Neuromancer by William Gibson.

in #fiction7 years ago

Let me start this review by saying that Neuromancer is a masterpiece. It introduced the cyberpunk genre and it is all around an amazing book.

How does cyberpunk differ from standard science fiction?

It is a part of the science fiction world but it usually involves hacking, computers, espionage, or something of that sort.

There are a truckload of cyberpunk books on the market and some of them are even good. Neuromancer is the granddaddy of them all.

Published in 1984 Neuromancer's ideas of the future are mostly valid even today.

How long is Neuromancer?

Neuromancer is technically a very short book at only 271 pages.

However, it is full of very complex ideas and reads like a much longer book.

It is also part one of the Sprawl series which are followed by Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive.

So what is Neuromancer about?

Neuromancer starts off with a down on his luck street hacker named Case. Case is a druggie who does whatever he can to get by.

That used to involve hacking computers, however, during his last hack his circuits were fried.

Now he has to get by running scams and small jobs.

Or so he thought.

As it turns out a new employer is actually able to fix his broken circuits making Case capable of hacking again on the condition that he is willing to participate in a very difficult and complicated hack.

Case soon becomes embroiled with his new associate and lover, the dangerous and beautiful Molly.

Together they go on an adventure that is not easily forgotten.

Is Neuromancer an easy read?

Neuromancer is more accessible than most of William Gibson's books.

However, the typical reader will likely find it quite complicated.

This is partly due to the jargon that William Gibson uses and his unusual way of describing things.

Some of the things he references actually do come true......... like the internet, albeit not in exactly the same way he expected.

Some do not, such as data still being stored on tape far into the future.

Mainly though, it's because of Williams Gibson's stream of conscious type of writing.

You are in his book and essentially on his ride. He doesn't really care if you fall off the side so you need to pay attention at all times.

I will say very matter of factly that if you read books at all then you should add Neuromancer to your library.

This is especially true if you like science fiction and cyberpunk.

It can be a difficult read but once you get used to his writing style it begins to get easier.

Neuromancer is a fascinating look at one man's idea of the future that turned out to be not that far off.

It's really cool to see some of Gibson's predictions come true and others not come true.

No matter how you look at it Neuromancer is truly a masterpiece.

I hope you liked this one.

I'm not much into the world of hacking and computer fiction. It does sound like an interesting story. If it were a movie I'd watch. Strangely I let techie themed movies. It's a good review.
