The dwellers in the dust - another story set in V's universe

in #fiction7 years ago

If you have not read the original story of mine (V), please do so first: https://steemit.com/fiction/@garethnelsonuk/v-another-short-cosmic-horror-sci-fi, the below story has spoilers for it.

His life lasted a period of 75 years, and for the majority of it he had worked in astronomy, he had seen the evolution from simple optical telescopes to space-based telescopes such as Hubble.

Within a single spot in the night sky he would often look upon the Great Bear or Ursa Major, for doing so reminded him of the greatness technology bestowed upon mankind. Within that small spot, unseen to previous technology, lay 3000 galaxies - each themselves containing millions and millions of stars. The hubble deep field was a constant reminder of the sheer size of the cosmos, and a reminder of how small we truly are.

The man had a son.

His life lasted a period of 200 years, and for the majority of it he had worked in space, he had seen the evolution from simple rocket launches of shuttles to true space colonisation.

Within a single spot visible in the night sky he would often look upon the Great Bear also, for doing so reminded him of how far mankind had yet to go.

His life lasted a period of 1000 years, and for the majority of it he had worked outside the solar system, he had seen the evolution of man from simple space colonisation to interstellar travel.

Within a single spot visible in the night sky he would often look upon Sol, for doing so reminded him of of his ancestors.

Centuries passed and a being observed a point in the distance. As man had looked out, something had looked back.

Over millennia the creature travelled, its mere existence had enabled the corruption of the older true universe when they had existed there, and now it contaminated our universe.

Within the vast clouds of cosmic dust dwelt the creature's children, and they multiplied and fed upon the vast mass ejections between galaxies. Through sciences unknown they curved spacetime back upon itself and thus arrived in the distant past of earth.

The dwellers in the dust now saw man, and began their work. A single cell structure penetrated beneath the earth, and there it replicated itself slowly.

When the dwellers in the dust had colonised earth, they began to open the minds of men to greater things, and thus the prophets of V were granted an opening.

I like the concept. I definitely stretches the imagination and preconceived notions.

Indeed I did. It's pretty much a prerequisite! I enjoy non-conventional (for lack of a better word) stories. I look forward to more!

And yes, I read your latest post too. That's what pulled me in.

I ask because it's weird I seem to have stronger upvotes on this story than the original - yet i'd expect everyone who enjoyed this one would also enjoy the original.

I'm quite likely to post more of this genre of fiction in future, so follow me and keep your eyes out.

Already followed. I await more...
