'1882: The Start of Something New'
I settled myself down next to the tree
with my drawings propped on the boulder. I quickly closed the front of my dress back up, and began to draw as he settled himself against a boulder next to my drawings.
“I do. I have an older brother about Morgan’s age. His name is Cohen. And I have a sister-in-law, his wife, Elizabeth. Do you have any siblings other then Genine?”
“No, I don’t,” I paused, not sure whether or not I wanted to ask this next question or not, “What’s your wife’s name?”
He laughed. “My wife, you ask?”
“Yes.”
“You’re not afraid to ask any question I see?”
“No. Well, yes some,” I sighed, “It’s a downfall.”
“I don’t think so.”
“Thank you.” I blushed again.
“Though to answer your question, I don’t have a wife. I haven’t found her yet,” he smiled.
I blushed and looked down.
Exactly the answer I had been hoping for.
“What about you? What’s your husband’s name?”
“I am also not married. For now, love is merely something I dream about.”
I looked out across the water, for a moment my thoughts wandering to the face of a man I recently had seen in my dreams. Odd, why did that come to mind? I wondered.
He broke the sudden silence by commenting on my most recent of drawings.
“This one of the stone bridge, where is that at?”
He pointed at the drawing.
“In my head, I suppose,” I smiled as he looked away from it up at me, “I drew it from a memory of a dream I had.”
“Wow…”
He stared at it.
Then I got back to drawing, and he got back to watching. After what felt like hours of silence, he spoke again.
“Would you do me the honor of joining me tomorrow night?”
“Tomorrow night? What is tomorrow night?”
He laughed, “Do you not pay attention to anything your sister talks about?”
“Not really nowadays.”
“Well tomorrow night is a gala in honor of her engagement to Morgan. And I was wondering if you wanted to join me as my date?”
I was speechless.
Genie didn’t tell me she was marrying him! Oh my god, so many things were rushing through my head, such a mix of emotions. I realized as I sat there thinking, that he was awaiting my answer.
“Oh, I’m sorry; yes I would love to go with you.”
He smiled, and I matched him.
Then we heard Genie giggling, and looked over to see that Morgan and she were walking to the carriage. I turned back to Lawrence.
“I guess you have to go then?”
“Unfortunately yes, but I will be here with Morgan to escort you and your sister, tomorrow night.”
We both stood up, and I bowed my head slightly, not wanting him to see the star-crossed expression on my face. Then he gently lifted my hand to his lips, let go, and strode towards the carriage.
I was so in the moment,
I didn’t hear Genie as she called for me. Finally, I reacted as she approached me.
“Clara? Are you alright?”
“Yes Genie, I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright. Can I talk to you?”
“Of course, let us walk on the beach shall we?”
We quietly walked down the hill, and started along the water’s edge, me allowing my toes to touch the water, while hers staid always out of the way of getting wet.
“Are you alright Genie?”
“I’m scared Clara.”
*“What are you afraid of?”
“I’m marrying Morgan, and I’m scared.”
“Why didn’t you tell me? I think Morgan is a good man, he has been asking faithfully for quite some time has he not?”
“Yes, he has.”
“Well, I think he loves you, and that’s something you should be excited about not afraid of.”
“I am… I just don’t want to let him down.”
“You? Let him down? I have no doubt that you won’t. Do you think you will love him?”
“I’m already beginning too.”
“That’s wonderful Genie! I’m so excited for you!”
“Thank you, my lovely little sister!”
She grabbed me in a hug
and we danced around, laughing with excitement.
“Oh, I almost forgot, we’re having an engagement gala, here at the house tomorrow night! I’m so excited! What should we wear?”
“I know, Lawrence told me. Yes, we must find suitable gowns.”
“Wait, I thought I saw Lawrence up here. What do you think of him?”
“Well, uh I don’t know. He seems wonderful.”
The last part sounded dreamier than I would have liked to let on.
“I see. Well did he ask you to go with him tomorrow night?”
“Yes.” I blushed and giggled.
“Maybe you guys will end up married and we will get to stay in the same family!”
