For the next thirty minutes, the message went on and on about how highly it thought of Aaron. It was very important to establish trust and mutual respect very early in this project and the message made sure this was the case by bringing up issues in Aaron's life nobody else knew of.

Aaron was sold. He had to be very careful with whoever was on the other side. There was just too much information about him, he wouldn't dare misbehave.

"From all I've told you, i'm sure you know this project can't be done at home"

"Yes I know. I have a lab."

"Of course you have a lab. The one on 5th Street."

"You should try to stop showing off."

"I'm never wrong so why should I?" the message replied and with that, Aaron began packing for the lab.

Down the stairs, May was engrossed in what was showing on TV.

"May, we need to talk."

"Yes we do need to talk. I've been waiting for you to come back here."

"Okay I guess you should go first then. What do you want to talk about?" Aaron asked as he took his seat in his favorite part of the sitting room.

May was still engrossed, trying not to miss any word being said on the TV. When the show was over, she began relating to her husband how it was said that humans will soon start to live forever and how it would be possible to be in various places without going with their bodies.

"So you mean we'll be running bodies-as-a-service soon?" Aaron teased "You believe things too easily my dear. There's no tech for these things."

"Yes I believe these things because they look real to me. They are very possible. So what is it you wanted to talk about?" May asked.

She was used to being teased by her husband but she'll never argue with him. For all she cared, he might be right. Maybe she's crazy for believing in the possibilities of really weird things happening.

She once saw a bird smile at her in high school but nobody believed her. Maybe it wasn't real but only a product of her imaginations. She didn't know and wasn't ready to care.

"I'll be leaving for the lab right away and will be there most of the time. There's a lot to be done."

Aaron had not been out of the house since his last day at Scieng and this had worried her a lot. She wanted him to step out and live again but not this way. This looked scary.

"Why?" She asked, pretending to not understand what Aaron had just told her.

"You know why, May."

"The message?"

Aaron nodded his head very slowly as if it would otherwise fall off.

May knew so well that if it was what he had decided to do, nothing she would say at this point will change anything. She got up from her seat, motioning him to do the same, and she hugged him. It was a long hug with a lot being said in that silence that they both fully understood.

Their marriage has been the perfect fairytale, the stuff myths and legends were made of. High school sweethearts to college sweethearts, and now going on sixteen years of being married. They were indeed best friends and nothing could come between them.

"You know I'll be fine." Aaron finally broke the silence.

"Yes I know, Superman!" May replied with a big grin on her face and began playfully patting his back

"Time to get to work baby. Move it." They both laughed as Aaron picked up his backpack and suitcase.

"Time to get to work" he said and shut the door behind him.

I'm already getting a sense of this relationship, excellent! "A bird smiled at her" I LOVE that imagery. And everything shrouded in mystery, really well done!

Hey I like what you did there with links to the next and previous page. Gives it more of a "book" experience.

Exactly what I was gunning for! Thank you 😊
Hope you're enjoying the story...
