Chapter 49: The Demons Advance on the SkyCastle
...........................................................................................................................................................................

The Scream

Comparatively speaking all previous screams had been mere whispers. This time the Dragons put their heart and soul into producing decibels. If any noise could have raised the dead this scream would have.

The Banshee wail was a call to arms. It was a warning. This was no drill, this was the real deal. The enemy was approaching.

Medieval castles on earth had had multiple walls. Lamar was a student of history, among many other things. He’d had multiple walls hastily constructed in a certain pattern, fortified and armed.

The Demon horde emerged from the forest onto a yellow brick road. On either side of the road were broad and deep ditches. The easier direction of travel was to follow the road, so they did. They followed the road for a relatively short distance until the road emerged from the forest. The scouts stopped dead in their tracks. They were amazed and terrified. They had come to the end of the world. Ahead of them, not very far in the distance the world just stopped. The scouts sent word back to their commanders. Then they sat down and shivered.

This was just wrong.

The commanders came forward, surveyed the road ahead and died. A Kindred arrow took each one in the throat. The Kindred Guerrillas continued their policy of taking out the officers..

The Demons poured out of the forest onto the yellow brick road and advanced toward the SkyFort. Here and there steam cars advance along with the infantry. There were damn few steam cars left.... thankfully. The guerrillas had taken most of them out in the previous decades long hike cross continent.

The horde reaches the curve in the road and hesitated. The yellow brick road curves and parallels the escarpment as far into the distance as they can see. Ahead, out past a little skinny strip of land, lies a veritable cornucopia of riches. FOOD! There are even animals visible grazing in fenced pastures. The horde is starving. They advance on the SkyFort thus sealing their doom.

The horde must breach a succession of fortifications to reach the riches so openly displayed in the distance. They drool looking at the cattle grazing in the fields. There’s the BEEF! The thought of food spurred them into a frenzy. They advanced, into withering fire.

There weren’t very many humans. Humans had one huge advantage over the elves. In fact they had an advantage over the Trolls. The human members of the Army that had fallen down the “rabbit hole” were combat trained and war hardened. They were good at what they did. Most of them were Civil War vets.

Lamar was never one to waste resources. This was going to be a quick and dirty fight. There would be NO second chance. Either they won or they died. The Trolls were experts at dirty. Lamar combined resources. After the blood transfusion language upload and a quick and dirty boot camp, with Berg as the Drill Instructor, he’d had Berg separate the Trolls into squads and appoint squad leaders.

The new squads managed to shoehorn in a few days of training as well as learning to work together. Mainly they built fortifications. They had incentive to build fast and build strong. They would be manning those very same defensive works.

As it happened Berg was in Sgt. Hobbs Platoon. The platoon was Lamar’s idea, he’d stole it from Gustavus Adolphus who had invented the system. It seemed the thing to do.
