#117: Naomi - Release the Guilt
‘That didn’t work out so well’ Naomi said in disgust.
“He gave me the creeps” Julie said.
“He left eye-tracks all over me.” Annette agreed. “I’m glad you didn’t let him on board. I didn’t trust him.”
“Neither did I” Naomi replied” and that’s exactly why I didn’t let him aboard.”
Julie nodded in agreement.
“We helped him stay alive.” Julie said “You’d think he would be grateful.”
“He sure didn’t sound grateful.” Annette said.
“Rather profane actually.” Naomi said “I wonder if he kissed his mother with that mouth.”
“He had a mother?” Julie asked in fake surprise.
“Impossible.” Annette responded “She would have drown him at birth.”
The three of the were giggling. It became a game.. Each one tried to out do the other. Some of it was pretty raunchy.
“He was most likely the product of binary fusion.” Naomi said.
“Like bacteria.” Annette barely choked it out. She was giggling so much it was hard to speak.
“Ahem” Naomi had been giggling to. She hadn’t laughed so hard since she was a...well it had been a long time.
“Now that we have THAT out of our system perhaps we should do something to prevent it from happening again.”
“Call your boy friend!” Julie said.
“The very thing!” Annette chimed in.
“He’s NOT by boyfriend!” Naomi pretended to be angry.
And that set them off again.
After quite a lot of giggleing and increasingly ‘out there’ suggestions and jokes Naomi tried again.
“That actually might not be a bad idea.” she gasped. “I think I will. You two behave...please?”
“Hello Naomi.”Kamiko Akiyama answered the call.” I’ve been wondering about you. Are you well?”
“Yes ma’am” Naomi said.
“How may I help you?” the dragon lady asked.
“Men!” Annette chimed in. Naomi gave here a nasty look.
“NASTY!” Julie put in her two bits.
Kamiko nodded. “Yes dear. They are. Somehow we’ve managed to put up with them for all these years. I doubt that much can be done. Many women tried. Many women failed. I’m afraid that’s the way it is....er...you have a man on board?”
“NO!” the three almost shouted.
“Well what’s the problem?” Kamiko knew exactly what the problem was. She was a master of human nature. She could almost read minds even without the assistance of advanced technology. With it...she was uncanny.”
“Well...we’ve been trying to help people” Naomi said.
“Like they helped me.” Annette said.
“And the baby.” Kamiko agreed. “Without your help it would have died.”
“Me too.” Annette said...all traces of laughter gone.
“But?” Kamiko prompted.
“Some of the people we try to help don’t deserve to be helped.” Naomi replied
“They deserve to die?” Kamiko asked..her face carefully neutral.
“Well....” Naomi, Annette and Julie murmured.
“I don’t know if I’d go that far.” Naomi responded.
“Very good.” Kamiko smiled. “But you shouldn’t put yourself at risk.”
“Well...yeah.” Naomi agreed.
“And you want my help?” Kamiko asked. “I can do that.”
“How? “ all three of the girls in the boat responded in unison.
“Well...we can do this the hard way or the easy way.” Kamiko told them. “Which do you want?”
The three girls looked at each other, no one knew what to say.
“Let me put it another way.” Kamiko said “ What if I told you that we have hot tubs, jacuzzi's , saunas, showers, shopping , restaurants and dancing with young gentlemen just waiting for you to come take advantage of them?”
“You DO?” Annette and Julie asked. Naomi narrowed her eyes. It was a trick. She knew it was.
“We certainly do.” Kamiko said “That’s the easy part.”
“What’s the hard part.” Naomi finally asked.
“I think you know.” Kamiko replied gently.
Annette was totally out to sea. Julie...not so much.
“The baby.” Naomi murmured so softly that they could barely hear her.
“The baby.” Kamiko agreed. “ You saved it’s live. You should release the guilt. You did everything you could.”
“That’s hard.” Namoi crying. She wouldn’t look Kamiko in the eye.
“ Yes it is” Kamiko agreed.
“What’s the easy way?” Annette was curious. She knew very little about the baby.
“The easy way is that we can send you re-supply and upgrade your manta.” Kamiko replied. “It can be made much larger and you will have more capability of dealing with unsavory refugees.”
“But I’ll continue to feel sorry for myself and wallow in my guilt.” Naomi was crying openly now.
Kamiko nodded. Annette was alarmed.
Julie was crying too.
Naomi looked at Annette first...clueless.
Then she looked at Julie.
“It’s your choice” Julie said “I’m with you no matter what you choose to do.”
Naomi took a deep breath...then blew her nose. She straightened her back and squared her shoulders.
Then she looked Kamiko in the eye.
“We’ll come.” She said.
“You’re coming home.” Kamiko assured her. “It’s always been your home whether you realized it or not. We're waiting for you. Have a safe trip.”
