#31: Naomi - That's the Story

“So that’s the story” Shelby, speaking thru the Eagle said “ the executive version anyway. I left out some of the messy parts. What it boils down to is this. We pretty much have the technology to do anything we can imagine...but we don’t know how to use it. None of use were techs. I was a ‘grunt’ in the Army before I was an inmate in an insane asylum for the better part of....well let’s just say for a very long time. The other’s on the Island are much the same. We have truck drivers, shop keepers, restaurant owners and security guards...not an electronic engineer in the bunch..and no computer programers. We’re pretty much learning on the job. In fact the person who’s learning fastest is a pre-teen boy.”

“Why am I not surprised” Julie said wryly “Gender bias raises it’s ugly head.

Naomi did a double take. What had she said..then she noticed that Julie was smiling.

“Got me” she said and made a mark in the air.

Shelby was a bit confused by the byplay but he soldiered on. “I said that to say this. This eagle is about the biggest thing we can put in the air. Not that we’ve had a lot of time to experiment. We’ve been pretty much just trying to stay alive. Anything that we’ve attempted to fly that was bigger...didn’t. We don’t know why.”

“What are you trying to tell us?” Naomi asked him. “Spit it out...we’re big gurls”

“We can’t just snatch you out of your lifeboat and bring you to the BannaSlug” Shelby told her “You’re gonna have to come to us.”

“This thing doesn’t move” Naomi muttered.” No motors or sail, even if we knew how to use them, which we don’t.”

“It doesn’t NOW...” Julie said.

“Exactly right” Shelby told them.”I can fix that part.”

“How?” both the girls asked him.

“That’s what the bottom feeder is for.” Shelby said.

“That’s a relief.” Naomi said.

“So how long will it take us to get to you.” Julie asked.

“Well that’s another thing.” Shelby said. “We’re on the lam...we’re running from the law, so we can’t just sit and wait for you.”

it's hard to tell what’s true or when they are lying isn’t it? It seems that they are more interested in influencing public opinion than they are reporting the facts.
