#117: “Are we going anywhere?”

Reggie asked her after they had been on the river for a few hours

“What do you mean?” Mary responded.

“Do we have a destination?” he asked

“Not particularly” she said “we’ve avoided being ‘thrown out onto the street’. We’re warm and safe. That’s enough.”

“I agree. That being the case. Let’s drop anchor on the downstream side of an island and just sit a while.” he said.

So they did. They found an uninhabited island in the middle of the river a good ways from shore. If anyone was going to bother them the’d have to work for it.

They stayed there a few days...a week maybe. They didn’t count the time. They ‘settled in’ to the boat. Things were moved, electronics were wired and rewired....until they got it right. Until they got it the way that they wanted it to be. They’d been somewhat rushed during the initial launch.

THEN...they began a slow drift down the river. Each night they’d find an island or a sand bar to protect them from drifting river junk. They weren’t in a big hurry. All they needed to do was to keep ahead of the pack ice.
