#16:Banana Slug: LotsaWatah

..............................................................................................................................................

The individuals comprising the citizenry of the former village of Flint Island, now renamed the Banana Slug, could pretty much do as they saw fit. They could live their lives aboard the Slug as they pleased. They had no more rules than any big family nor any taxes. While on the island they’d had a life. Oddly enough it was better than it had been when they had been ‘working for the man.’ They were no longer dependent on pleasing him or the state or any government. The Banana Slug was big enough, well connected enough and well stocked enough that “having a life” was more possible now than it ever had been, for them.

None of them missed working for the ‘man’.

......................

The Banana Slug wasn’t moving fast, in fact it was moving faster than it’s namesake but not by much. It was moving a leisurely stroll perhaps, for a fat man. Shelby had removed the roofs from the building and reconfigured the Slug’s external profile in an effort not only to make it harder for them to be seen but to also relive structural stress. He’d apologized to the children about their bat-cave. It had to go. The only thing visible on the surface now were the two eye-pods spaced yards apart. They looked like piles of drift wood. The tail, far behind, remained underwater. The eye-pods, that is the control cockpits that were above water were camouflaged as much as possible. They looked like floating trash. In the constant rain and fog they were extremely hard to see much less see what they actually were.

“Doesn’t the river seem to be awfully wide?“ Marc asked Shelby VERY sarcastically.

“Well yeah, it is.“ he said, oblivious to the sarcasm “It’s over the levies, the flood plains are living up to their names. Back in 1927 it was over fifty miles from bank to bank. I wonder what it is now.

“So what should we be calling it?” Marc asked.

“Call what?” Shelby was puzzled.

Marc said. “The river. Should it be called the Gulf of Mississippi? The Mississippi Bay? What?”

“I mean, “ Marc continued “It only seems logical. The Colorado river dumps into the Gulf of California south of Mexicali and it’s called the Gulf Of California. Right? Same thing here only more so?”

“Oh shit.” Shelby said

Shelby looked at Marc in shock, now he understood the sarcasm.

Marc grinned like a cat in the cream. He never had liked California. ”Yeah, seriously, Oh Shit. I hadn’t thought about that. The Salton Sea and the whole Imperial Valley is below sea level.”

Shelby nodded. “San Joaquin Valley too, the whole central part of California will become an inland sea. That happened once before when the Pineapple Express got fractious and flooded all of California. The state went BankRupt.”

“Awwwwwww “ Marc said, shaking his head. “ Too bad, so sad. Poor, poor California.”

it's hard to tell what’s true or when they are lying isn’t it? It seems that they are more interested in influencing public opinion than they are reporting the facts.

Sort:

The good side of the flooding if it ever does in reality happen in California, is that the State of Jefferson would have a natural border to the south, and to the North, cause I am pretty sure the willamette valley in Oregon would also be flooded, during such a catastrophe, Thus making the northern and southern mountain men of their ex-states rather happy.

did the willamette valley flood the last time?

Copy and paste from google search wiki-post:

The Willamette Valley Flood of 1996 was part of a larger series of floods in the Pacific Northwest of the United States which took place between late January and mid-February 1996.

Yeah it floods, sometimes real bad.

aren't valley's created by rivers?

That is one way valleys are created, another is by Glacial retreation. I am not sure how old the willamette valley is. I think also valleys, maybe smaller ones can be created by pyroclastic flows, and then heavy rains washing the muds and ashes and scouring the lands. But not real sure on that. But the retreating glaciers do cause valleys. Most of the U shaped valleys were from Glaciers.

Good one. How many chapters will this one be? Best wishes, Sveto.

no idea how many chapters there will be.
I'm writing it as it's being posted.
I'm a few chapters ahead...but not all that many.

In the Banana Slug apparently there is no central power, the decisions are decentralized, everyone makes their decisions, but all citizens are very close, do not want to show themselves publicly and navigate slowly but with security. Events will follow that will devastate entire areas, will remain under water. But the fittest will probably survive

monkey sphere...slithering down the river.

Nice story again sir, looking forward to the next episode

Great design sir. What tool do you use?
I use photoshop and I'm not sure I can do this with it
