#82: Weldon-Purpose

Weldon and his wife, Sherry were sitting at the table having a few beers with Kamiko and Shelby in Virtual Reality.

Kamiko and Shelby were the de facto leaders of the WaterTribe and they were visiting the new comers one by one. No one had been so rude as to call it an interview. It was merely a friendly get together over drinks.

They’d been talking for several hours. Much to Weldon’s surprise he trusted Shelby. Amazingly enough he trusted Kamiko even more so.

“You know” Weldon muttered, almost to himself “I used to have a relatively simple life, as a farmer. It’s gotten more complex now in some ways, much simpler in others.”

Shelby grinned recalling his time at Sam Snead. “I could tell you about simple. Life does have a way of sneaking up on us and bitting our butt doesn’t it?”

“Amen to that.” Weldon agreed.

“Perhaps it would be better if you summarize what is bothering you.” the Dragon Lady, as usual, cut to the heart of the matter.

“Purpose” Melton said almost instantly.

“There was no doubt about my purpose. It was to make a living in order to provide for my family. That much was crystal clear. The way I chose to do so was by Farming. Farming is hard, but it’s still simple in concept. Grow stuff and sell it.” He said.

“Things have changed haven’t they” The dragon lady asked him. “Not even taking the flood into consideration”.

“Yes they have. I’ve been Future Shocked” he said. “Taking care of my family is still my purpose. But what defines taking care of them? SSmoke makes everything I used to sweat over, pitifully easy.”

“And this is bad?” the Dragon Lady said “How?”

I’m not sure” he said “It seems that there should be some type of effort involved? Some type of striving?”

Ah! “ the Dragon Lady’s smile drove away the fog. “you do understand. Let me put it in different words. Perhaps that will help.”

Weldon was startled “OH? Ok. Give it a shot.”

“One way to address your dilemma is to consider Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.” she said.

Consider” she snapped her fingers and a helpful visual aide appeared.



“You’ve pretty much got them nailed down solid. You have indeed been industrious” the Dragon Lady said “and I have every confidence and expectation that you shall continue to be so. “

“And why would that be?” Sherry asked. “Meaning no disrespect”.

“Because you two are the type of people who will strive to finish climbing to the top of that Pyramid and once there you want to stay there. In fact you are already there if I’m any guess, and you have been for some time. Right now you’ve encountered a tiny bump in the road.” she said. “your purpose in life has been removed. You have nothing to strive for.”

“I suspect that now your new goal in life will be to make it so that anyone in your monkey-Sphere, and beyond that, for select ‘others’, will be able to climb to the top also.“ She said. “Because that’s the type of people you are.”

“That’s all very fine theoretically “ Weldon said “but how do I put it into practice?”

“Learning and Teaching.” the Dragon lady said. “ Just as man has been doing since he became man, all else is secondary. Strive to learn then strive to teach other’s what you have learned.”

Sherry and Weldon looked at the Dragon Lady in surprise, then a light dawned and they begin to smile.

“I believe you are right” Sherry said.

“How am I going to keep doing that?” Weldon asked.

Shelby grinned “As they say in the Marines. You must innovate, adapt and overcome. I loved those damn Jarheads.”

“Sounds reasonable” he agreed.

“Find a niche.” The Dragon Lady said. ”then fill it.”

Weldon was thoughtful. “Well yeah. So simple when you put it that way.”

“And there’s another thing.” Shelby said. “Food. It’s always good to have some.“

“I’m for that” the Dragon Lady said.

it's hard to tell what’s true or when they are lying isn’t it? It seems that they are more interested in influencing public opinion than they are reporting the facts.
