#29: Naomi: I'm Listening

Naomi looked from what looked like a YUGE catfish to the Eagle and back again.

“My life has become SO strange lately” she muttered to herself.

Julie heard her and said...”Amen”

The Eagle replied “You have no idea.”

Naomi closed her eyes for a minute and shook her head like a dog shaking off water..then she looked at the Eagle and said...”Ok...Mr. Wiz. You said you have some ‘splaining to do. Now would be a good time to start.”

“Call me Shelby.” the Eagle said “I hope that you and I will become good friends. Shirley this isn't too soon to be on a first name basis?”

“Don’t call me Shirley.” Naomi said..but she smiled when she said it in what the Wizard thought was a MOST adorable way. Yup..the wiz was hooked.

“Atta gurl” Shelby told her...”This’ll take a while so you might as well be comfortable.

The girls did so then the Eagle said “It all started a few million years ago in a star system far far way.”

Hours later Shelby finished his presentation.

The two girls had been following his every word. They had been amazed.

“You’re right” Naomi said “I had no idea.”

“SO! Julie said “We have a big catfish, an eagle, an egg, and a life pod. What next? Which do we Bar-B-Q first? The fish or the bird?”

The Eagle looked a Julie and said “that’s not how it works. That’s not how any of this works.”

“Yeah I know.” Julie replied. “ I was just trying to lighten things up. You know? A little humor?”.

“Very little.” Naomi replied , but she was smiling.

“The supplies are not what you think” the eagle told them

“Why am I not surprised?” Naomie groaned. “Nothing has been lately”

Eagles can’t smile..no lips..but Shelby wanted to. “The supplies I was referring to are more in the order of Structural Smoke. That thing that looks like a big catfish is what we call a bottom feeder. It’s job is to find the ‘right stuff’ on the river bottom, consume it, and turn it into structural smoke. Do to a little...er...misunderstanding by a boy named Carl...it got separated from it’s school.”

“How’d that happened?” Naomi asked.

“Carl was the tele-operator at the time. He tried to make the Bottom Feeder eat a coal mine. It worked pretty well for a while. Coal is just chock full of goodness. Carl’s plan came unraveled when the coal-mine caved in.”

Julie said “Yup..I suspect that could ruin your whole day.”

“It pretty much did for Carl” Shelby said. “That boy attracts trouble like a magnet attracts iron filings. It took as a while to get it sorted out. Carl wasn’t particularly ‘up front’ about it. When we’d finally figured it all out.. and worked the bottom feeder out of it’s underwater cave. It was far, far behind. Then you called.”

“Serendipity” Julie said.

“Sarah who?” Naomi asked.

it's hard to tell what’s true or when they are lying isn’t it? It seems that they are more interested in influencing public opinion than they are reporting the facts.
