I know I've already said this a number of times, but I still can't believe this is your first real foray into writing fiction. Incredibly well done. The type of beginning that readers will love and hate you for, and be completely pulled in by. If it was a finished book, it's one that I would binge read. I could say that with some confidence having read the next several chapters :)
I suppose I lied actually. I wrote a very short piece of writing first, that was intended to be Game of Thrones fan fiction. However, when I realised how rich my story was going to be, it made more sense to just create my own universe with its own complex dynamics, and simply import my characters into this new world.
