Said Plato, Is this the real life or or is this just fantasy?
Socrates replies, you ask too many questions!

Cindy

The tears didn’t seem to stop. She wiped them with her sleeve, and took two deep breaths. it didn't help. She went to the ladies room and sat there, numb, till the tears gave up.
What was the time? the school seemed deserted.
She went home with her head bowed, hoping nobody would notice her red-rimmed eyes. Once up in the sanctuary of her room, she could hear the voices of people down below. They sounded happy. It bothered her. Why couldn’t the world to be as miserable as she was. She was a terrible person. That’s why he didn't love her.
Nathan. They had started dating six months ago, her first love. He would walk her home and they would sit on the bumper of his car discussing philosophy. He would get his battered camera out and yell Candide Picture!
Then on her birthday he’d glued those pictures together, and made a terrible card which read “Nothing voltaire us apart”. The world seemed a happy place. Away from the bickering at home, the teasing by her siblings. It was like he was her immunity to pain. He’d been happy too. They had swapped their sob stories. His parents also fought incessantly. They had gotten more violent, until they separated. That was a month ago.
That is when he stopped being the philosophical sweet guy who dropped terrible puns in her notebooks. He started talking to other girls, laughing with them, as if she didn't exist. She still loved him, and knew he was going through something. She waited patiently for him to come.He didn't. Instead, today as she walked passed the parking lot, he’d seen her with Cindy. They were making out. She’d felt blank for a while and then the inevitable tears had come. She was alone again. Maybe she had always been alone.
She looked at herself in the mirror and said- you will not cry over some guy! and laughed for it rhymed.

Nathan

Nathan was waiting for her for over half an hour. His mind felt blank, but can a mind be truly blank eyes shall always see…His train of thought stopped at one word. She was always Plato, she asked the questions. Her mind was always on a different plane. He found it hard to keep up with her. What had she ever seen in him. She called him her Socrates lovingly, he used to stay up all night to understand philosophy, make little notes so he seemed intelligent.

Cindy always came for ice cream on Friday. He felt strange. He wanted to tell her everything so that at least one thing in his life would go back to normal. He had been a jerk, this past one month. He didn't want to get hurt like dad did, when mom ran off with her boss. He resented everything when this happened. Looking at his parents, love seemed like a joke. He didn't want to give any person the power to hurt him. He decided to just play the field. Have fun and move on. What he had with Cindy...
He was making out with Althea- his friend Clay’s girl, when he realized what he was doing. His Cindy won't do that. She would never hurt him, and he should stop hurting her. She was the only person in his life who would never let him down. He got out of the car, disgusted with himself.

He had gone in search of Cindy, but she was nowhere to be found. She didn't come to chemistry class, missed gym and biology.

If she didn’t come here. He didn’t want to think about it.Curiosity led to pain. And Knowledge, Cindy’s voice said.
“I think therefore ice cream”-that was how he’d asked her out.
He tried calling her, but to no avail.
Nathan trying to block as always, blindly walked towards Cindy’s house.
He rang the bell.Cindy came down. She was wearing a fancy cocktail dress and sunglasses.
He started laughing.
So, the queen called you for dinner?
It’s a costume party, I’m going as Audrey Hepburn.
You didn't tell me about a party.
So, I have to tell you everything now? Nathan, I don’t like where we’re going, I don’t think we should continue to see each other. Can’t you see its not working?
The words came out in a rush. She flounced back, giving a haughty expression and turning her back to hide the tears. He never saw them.
He didn’t have answer.
He was numb again.

A few years later
The hall was full. She was the famous philosopher. He was in the audience.
Why are idealists so good at cynicism?
Love hurt them. He whispered. For once answering her question.
