RHYTHM (EPISODE THREE)
I watched through the glass in the door as they desperately tried to resuscitate her, it wasn't a pretty sight, they used the defibrillator on her severally and I watched her lifeless body bounce up and down as it reacted to the jolt of electricity, I could see the hope in the nurses grow less every time they used it, I could see the monitor, it was still a flat line, at that point, I was only hanging on to a little strand of hope, I lost all that hope when the doctor dropped the defibrillator while it was still a flat line, I knew at that moment that she was gone.
It was all happening slowly, the doctor removing his gloves, the look of disappointment they all had on their faces, they had given up, I could see it, the doctor checked his wrist watch and said something to the nurse who wrote it down, how could I be losing someone I just met, I moved away from the door to sit on the bench in the hallway, I sat there for about 5 minutes thinking how my day went from frustrating to depressing, then I realized the doctor and nurses never came out of the room, I quickly ran back to the door, I barged in out of confusion and excitement, she was awake, I'd never been so happy and confused at the same time, I ran to her and gave her a gentle hug bearing her condition in mind, I was met with a confused look and an awkward smile, then I realized..."she probably doesn't know who I am", she confirmed it when she asked "uhm, who are you?", the doctor then told her that I came to the hospital with her, she looked a little less confused, so I said "hi, I'm John", then she replied "hi john, I'm confused", I held my laughter back given the situation, it didn't stop me from smiling though. "We'll let you guys talk", the doctor said before leaving the room along with the nurses.
"So, how are you doing", I asked, "well I recently got hit by a bus, so, I'm not great", she replied, I smiled thinking to myself "she's definitely a keeper" the sound of her voice interrupted my thoughts "why did you come to the hospital with me" she asked, "not that I'm complaining" she added, I thought for a while before replying "I honestly don't know, you were in my car earlier and then I saw you lying lifeless on the floor, I had to do something", she smiled and whispered "thank you". I reached into my pocket to bring out her ipod and earphones which one of nurses gave me earlier, I honestly didn't think she was going to want it back, considering what happened, the look on her face said otherwise, it was like a puppy staring at treats, she got really excited and adjusted herself into a sitting position, for a while I wondered why she was so attached to it before finally giving it to her.
She started untangling the earphones and I thought to myself "is she about to plug those things in her ears again", "come sit" she said tapping the chair beside her bed, I smiled and walked over to the chair, she then resumed her sleeping position and handed me a side of her earphones saying "you like music don't you", I smiled again and collected it, I felt a little disturbed for a while when I remembered seeing it in her blood, but I got over it fast, the music started playing, it was a beautiful melody, I waited for the words but I didn't hear any, I could see her falling asleep, "she must be really tired" I thought, staring at the little vessel of beauty and confusion laying in bed with a half smile, I closed my eyes too, enjoying the wordless music in my ear, and wondering how I ended up in a hospital with a beautiful girl I just met.
