THE UBER DRIVER

in #fiction6 years ago (edited)

Mr. Ejiro stood at the reception area of the Federal Palace Hotel trying to order an Uber ride. He was a 59 year old married man and had three grown up sons. His youngest son was the same age with Oma his “side chick.” Oma sat on the couch at the reception pressing her phone.

She was a student at Abia State and had come all the way to Lagos to meet her “sugar daddy.”

Mr. Ejiro had successfully ordered a ride and the driver called immediately to confirm his location.

“Good afternoon sir. This is Uche from Uber.”

“Good afternoon Uche. I’m Mr. Ejiro. I'm at the Federal Palace Hotel, VI. How soon can you get here? My girlfriend needs to catch up with her flight. We are running late.”

“I'm five minutes away sir. I'll be there soon.”

Seven minutes passed by quickly before the Uber driver arrived and met with Mr. Ejiro. Uche met Mr. Ejiro standing outside with a black medium sized box. Uche came down and helped Mr. Ejiro put the box in the boot of his car.

“Sir, is this all the luggage?” Uche asked.

“Yes. That's all. Please hold on let me call my girlfriend. She is sitting at the reception.”

Mr. Ejiro called Oma on his phone and entered the back of the car to wait for her. Uche also entered the car and started the car while waiting for Oma to join them. Oma joined Mr. Ejiro at the back of the car in a minute.

Without looking back, Uche asked, “Sir, can I start the trip now?”

“Yes please. I'm going to the MMA 2 of the Murtala Mohammed airport.”

“Do you have a preferred route sir?”

“No. Just take the fastest route. Her flight is in an hour. Drive fast but safely please.”

Oma and Mr. Ejiro cuddled up and smooched throughout the ride. Uche focused on the road but could hear the two lovers being all romantic in his car. Fifty minutes later, they arrived at the airport. Uche pulled up at the drop off point of the departure park for domestic flights.

"“Sir, we are here. I'm ending the trip now,” Uche said.*

“Thank you,” he said to Uche and then said to Oma, “I wish you could stay longer. I will miss you.”

Uche ended the trip while Mr. Ejiro and Oma were still seated. Obviously, they were not in a hurry to leave each other.

“Please give me a 5 star rating,” Uche said.

“Sure, I will. Please can you open the boot of your car for me?” Mr. Ejiro said as he opened the car door and stepped out.

Mr. Ejiro turned around to open the other side of the door for Oma while Uche opened the boot and brought out the box. Mr. Ejiro and Oma walked to where Uche was standing with the box and for the first time since the ride began, Uche saw Oma’s face. They knew each other. Oma was visibly stunned and tried to hide her face in embarrassment.

Mr. Ejiro didn’t notice that something was wrong. Uche quickly and gently closed the boot of his car while pretending not to know Oma. But he was sure that she was the same lady that he was in a relationship with.

Uche turned to Oma, smiled and said, “Have a nice flight, ma.”

Then he walked back into his car and drove off.
