Morgan walked into the security office. Two more of the guards sat lounging in their chairs. They looked over as she entered before returning their attention to a film they were watching on a monitor.
“What’s up, Morgan, are you bored already?” asked one, his attention already returned to the film. Morgan didn’t reply as she pulled a small tranquillizer gun out of her holster, and both guards were unconscious at their post before they even realised there was a threat. The General was paranoid about assassination so the guards were only allowed tranquillizer guns. As deputy commander of security she did have keys to an extensive armoury though, where she could get any number of other guns that could make large explosions happen or just put holes into people. Both guards sat slumped in their chairs and would normally remain that way for the next twenty-four hours. Knowing what was happening within two hours’ time, Morgan doubted they would ever wake up. She moved over to the main security computer and placed a small disc into the drive.
Within ten minutes of it activating the virus on the disk would shut down the estates’ defence systems. Checking the systems’ overview she saw that two of the remaining guards were down in the basement with the prisoner, while the last one was on the top floor. With a last look at the two sleeping guards Morgan headed out of the room. She would have to dispose of the one on the roof first.

Grommit sat on the floor, her legs crossed. Her left arm itched below the medi-patch that was healing the shattered bones in her wrist. After each beating her brother would ensure her injuries were treated, ready for the next round of punishment inflicted on her. For almost a week now, Jee hadn’t been down to give her a beating. She didn’t know why this was but was thankful for the respite and a chance to fully heal.
The two guards that he had left seemed to spend much of their time watching programs on a monitor screen. They were never rotated with any of the other guards and took it in turns sleeping on a small bunk. Twice a day a robot would enter to bring them food and drink, and the meagre rations that she was allowed. When the door into the chamber opened neither guard bothered to look up, so they didn’t see the female guard who walked in through the doorway. Grommit saw the robot that delivered the meals beyond the door, its head unit severed. The new arrival was ignored until one of the guards finally looked up. Surprised, he started to rise, a look of confusion on his face. The female guard leapt forward unexpectedly, a cyber-sword in each hand. The four-foot laser blades materialised out of the handles as she swung her arms in a vicious arc, the blades slicing through both guards, who fell dead before they realised what was happening. Grommit was impressed by the speed of the new arrival; the cyber-sword was a highly skilled weapon, one that only an expert would attempt to use against armed guards. When armed it had a four-foot blade that was lethal in close combat, slicing through even armoured steel. When not in use the laser blade retracted into the handle for easy storage and could be clipped to a belt. The newcomer ran over to the cell control panel and shut down the energy shield that kept Grommit imprisoned.
“Move it, girl, we’ve only got a minute before the second level of security kicks in,” she shouted, already heading back for the door, the swords still held at the ready. Grommit jumped up and ran for the door. As she reached it she heard metallic grinding from behind her. Turning to look back into the chamber where she had been held, she saw circular sections of the floor sliding back and robotic infantry units rising up in cylinders from the floor.
“We need to move before those things start to activate,” Morgan said, grabbing Grommit by the arm. “There’s over fifty of those things in there and this door won’t hold them for long. We need to get to the armoury.”
Grommit stepped through the door while Morgan pressed the button to shut it before placing a small dial onto the control unit that shorted out the circuit in a shower of sparks. Turning, without a further word she headed up the passage to the surface.
