Tired heart...

That morning he had woken up with a strong pressure on the left side of his chest. He didn't want to tell Martha about his discomfort because of two things: that morning they would go to the beach with their friends and the other because he realized that he was still upset about what had happened at night. They had fought again. He had already lost count of the times they had discussed this month. The reasons were diverse: from an empty pitcher inside the refrigerator, a shirt on the dining room chair, talking with a full mouth, a yawn while he spoke; in short, anything could trigger his wife's discomfort and from there the great storm, the great hurricane, the fearsome Martha volcano, as he used to call it, would erupt.

What was disturbing and worrying was not that they had only feuded this month, they had also done so throughout the year. Martha's tiredness, sadness, neglect and lack of love were noticeable. He, however, had assumed a silence that said a lot, which spoke of his inability to solve the problems accumulated in that marriage of 10 years. His married life had fallen into a hole where they had not been able to get him out, like a broken-down car in the middle of nowhere with tired and weak passengers.

Martha looked at him sidelong when she saw him holding his hand to his chest and massaging himself:

_What do you have," asked the woman, looking in the mirror and smearing the white blocking cream on her face.

"Nothing," he said a little annoyed, thinking how hypocritical his wife could be. He knew that she only asked so as not to pass like the bad story; to face him, then, that she did care about her partner; not like him, who never noticed anything, who was not a detailer, who didn't know when she cut her hair, when it was their anniversary, when something happened to her, what bothered her or what made her happy. Martha simply left the room with her bag full of blocking cream, towel, magazine, leaving a message in the air: "I'm ready"; message that really said in the background: hurry, don't make me wait, we'll be late. He finished grooming himself in silence thinking how wonderful his life would be if he could go away, leave everything. "I really would be very happy," he thought aloud.

In the car, everything was silent, except for the moment when it occurred to him to put music on the sound player. His grumpy wife turned off the device, excusing herself with a severe headache. He complained angrily to her and reproached her that if her head hurt, why didn't they stay home? She from her seat looked at him fulminantly, he knew of that look in spite of her dark glasses, and said to him clenching her teeth, as in a whisper: because I needed to go out of the house and see things that make my life happier. The rest of the journey went on in a tense calm, with no jolts. Only the pain in his chest made him leave the steering wheel a little and frown a little. Martha pretended not to see.

When they got to the beach, the friends were already there. Martha put on the best of her smiles. It was impressive how his wife was able to transform his behavior in front of others: a woman full of smiles and attentions towards him; a woman full of affection and happiness; a happy and loving wife of her husband. Meanwhile, he looked at her from afar and took advantage of her closeness to embrace her, give her a kiss on the cheek, talk to her as he did in the past. He thought that everything would be different if Martha were always like this, if they were always surrounded by their friends. His chest hurt and he massaged a little and moved his arm. Martha asked him with a worried face: "Are you still with the pain in your chest? He saw her from the front and believed her concern, so he kindly said: Don't worry. It must be gas. He kissed her on the forehead and she laughed.

After the meal, Martha lay in the sand to sunbathe. He saw how all the friends got into the water. He wanted to stay for a while in the lounger and read a little, but he began to feel a heaviness all over the left side of the body. His arm and left hand became numb. He thought maybe he shouldn't have eaten so much that he had severe indigestion. In spite of the fresh afternoon air, he felt heat, a cold sweat covered his whole body. He got up as best he could and walked to the bottom of the sea. Dizzy and with his heart beating, his ears exploding, he immersed himself.

Minutes later, the group of friends rescued the body. Martha looked visibly affected at the horizon. To the closest ones who were there, she said: And I asked him what was going on, what he had and a thousand times he said nothing. The friends hugged her and calmed her, and she thought: better widow than divorced. Then she felt a headache begin.

Powerful story. The drama of so many couples wonderfully depicted here. It goes on to show that silence can in fact kill us.
I liked this image

His married life had fallen into a hole where they had not been able to get him out, like a broken-down car in the middle of nowhere with tired and weak passengers.

I think that many would identify with it. The sad or ironic thing is that in most relationships, like with most mechanical failures, it is just a matter of looking at the right place, checking the right part, doing the right thing. The skillful mechanic does not even need to get dirty. Most of us know nothing about cars, even though we drive them.

I confess to being ignorant, clumsy and novice when it comes to relationships. I think it's one of the things that doesn't have magic formulas or recipes, because what's good for one might not work for another. In the end, all relationships tend to be a bunch of hits and mistakes, and according to where the scale tips, whether it works or not. Greetings and hugs, @hlezama

Very good story and history very close to reality that, surely, live many couples in their relationships. The image that title of the story is very effective, because, in truth, the hearts get tired, that is to say, the love, the affective proximity, the comprehension, the communication... they seem to enter in a state of exhaustion, of stress. The fictional story you present to us reveals this in a crude way.
Thank you for your post, @nancybriti.

That's right, @josemalavem. relationships go through stages in which love is set aside, forgotten and even changed. The problem is when the relationship falls into that dark pit and no member of the couple has the strength to bring the relationship afloat, save it. This happens even in the best relationships. Greetings and hugs

@nancybriti, In my opinion when people hold Lack Of Understanding then everything start breaking. So people should understand this and have to make relationships and bonds more Strong.

According to you, @chireerocks! For a relationship to work there must be important elements such as communication and understanding. Even in the kitchen, chefs are attentive to the cooking of their food. It's the same in relationships. Thank you for commenting.

You've gave great example for sure. 👍

A very sad and disturbing story! I know that many people complain of a spouse like this wife, street angel, home devil is the Irish name for this type of person I believe. I suppose he has been released, but has the wife been rewarded? Her duplicity causes those headaches, and she will be left with those it seems.
This was an excellent read.

A fictional story very close to the reality of many couples who expect a change in destiny to recompose their lives.
How sad it is not to take advantage of the time that we have, which is usually very short.
@nancybriti, a good story. ¡Hugs!
