@dandays has been hinting of some mighty fearsome #fff changes this week so all hands will be on deck to get the party going for the rousing announcement!
Meanwhile, back at the ranch - our mornings usually start with a cup of coffee and homemade rusks.
I'd like to show my Food Fight Friday Friends how it's done when all you have is a coffee plunger and a manual milk frother and you upgrade the coffee to a cappuccino!
We've been having torrential rains here in Durban, South Africa, and a good strong cup of homemade cappuccino will certainly go towards giving us the oomph to face what this day will bring, especially as the Big Five Food Fight Friday is on tonight!
We run a little self-catering bnb from our home; I know I'm confusing you with that statement now, but what it means is that we run our self-catering two bedroom Lily's Cottage for short term business and leisure guests from our property. I just call it a bnb as most are familiar with that concept. Don't think I'm spared from making early breakfasts though!
Most of our business guests have hectic schedules, so for them I will get up at the crack of dawn to prepare a hearty breakfast.
We're well into retirement and even though this job at home keeps us frantically busy some days, we are able to enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee every morning.
Best to use freshly ground coffee beans, ground coarsely for the plunger (aka French press). We enjoy a dark roast coffee.
- Warm the plunger with hot water before adding a heaped coffee measure per cup to the plunger.
- Something I learned recently was to add a little cold water to the ground coffee or else the ground coffee beans will burn which spoils the taste.
- Add the correct number of cups of boiling water to the plunger and give it a gentle stir.
- Replace plunger lid and let it sit for about two minutes before slowly pressing the plunger down.
- We enjoy our coffee with coffee creamer and milk froth as I find adding milk dilutes the coffee.
Now that coffee's sorted my #fff friends, I will show you how to make a real quick and easy lunchtime tart using basic pantry staples, nothing fancy and no real recipe except for the base.
Easy pizza / tart base
- 2 cups Self Raising Flour
- 1/4 tsp Salt
- 1/2 cup Oil
- 3/4 cup Boiling Water
Mix all together to a soft, smooth dough.
Note: this base can be used as a quick pizza base but for this tart you press it out to approx 1cm thickness and add any topping your heart desires.
I used finely diced spring onions & diced onions, sauteed, diced parsley, 2 small cans pink salmon, approx 2 tablespoons Mayo & grated Cheddar Cheese.
This all gets topped with 1 cup Milk beaten with 2 eggs & seasoned to taste.
Bake in oven at 180C for about 30 -40 min.
Slice and serve hot with a salad; we had ours with vines tomatoes from the garden.

Then we got to the coffee. “Plunger?” Are they only called a French Press in Europe? 🤔 Fact—in the UK, where tea is everyone’s coffee (not my cup’0 tea) there isn’t any coffee makers, not even in hotels. So you k ow what Pura and I did? Ran down to the market and picked up a
Frenchpressplunger and now it’s in my suitcase. 😉Then I got to the tart and now I want you to make me breakfast and don’t be bashful with the tomatoes, please.

Sooo glad you got yourselves a plunger aka French Press, or is it the other way around? Now you can have real coffee anywhere, just be careful with that glass, they make them way too fragile! I was rather mean with the tomatoes wasn't I!
