The No-Time-For-Bullshit Woman

in #feminism7 years ago

Oddly enough one of the most vivid memories of our recent vacation in Italy has nothing to do with the kids having fun at the beach. It's about a woman I saw on a bus. A real woman going about her business. She was carrying the cutest baby in a sling on her back, a bag of groceries and two heavy loads of mineral water. Quite a lot. For lack of a better term I'd call her the 'no-time-for-bullshit' woman. The kind of woman that doesn't have time to be bothered by catcalls or mansplaying. Actually, she was pretty big and strong so I pity the poor guy that would've even considered taking up an inch of her seat. The kind of woman that doesn't need to rant on Twitter about men as she seemed quite capable of taking care of herself in the real world.
For the life of me, I cannot imagine that woman at a fancy protest, wearing a pussy-hat and holding a banner proclaiming My vagina is awesome. Just didn't seem the kind of woman that had issues in that department.
The point I'm trying to make is not that poor women who work hard are to be put on a pedestal and worshipped as the only real women in this world. I'm sure the lady on the bus would've preferred to have the water and groceries delivered to her door. I know I would. But I also live in the real world and I'm not scared of it.

It's not the hat that matters, but the brains

The same goes for the women that engage in endless rants about male-privilege in the workplace. The way I see it, business-owners and bosses are profit-oriented and if you can do a job they'll hire you whether you're a man, a woman or a one-legged midget. The only problem is that you need to have skills. You need to be good at whatever job you apply for. Come to think of it, in all the places I've worked there were plenty of women in management positions.
To be honest, I do remember the moment a male colleague got promoted and I didn't. The job required long hours which I couldn't put in having a small child in my care. He didn't have kids. Male privilege? No, just a simple fact!
A good friend of mine is country manager for a large multinational company. The only woman to hold such a position in the company. Of course she has issues with her many male colleagues, but it all goes down to money and profits. Sure, she has to go through unpleasant conf-calls every week, but it's not mansplaining when the boss tells her what she should do. It's just the boss being angry the numbers aren't good enough.
Needless to say, my friend doesn't go to the dreaded budget meetings wearing a pussy-hat. She takes a laptop and her business plans.
You won't see my friend on a bus and she puts her shopping in the trunk of her cool company-car, but she doesn't have time for bullshit either.

Awesome. We need more people like you to change the narrow mindset of people. I liked this article so much, that I even mentioned you in one of my recent posts.

Thank you very much. I did check your post. Very sad story. Crying doesn't help, though. If a woman is not happy, she needs to fly out of the cage.

You are right. But this is a common story here in India. Woman need to change their definitions of love here. Loving other person more then yourself is not love at all, because one who doesn't love themselves can't love someone else. Thank you for giving it a read. :) Keep up the good work.
