Uterine Prolapse: Main Reasons
Uterine prolapse is a very wide-spread pathology that is diagnosed among 10% women under 30, 40% women in the age of 30-40 years, and half of the women in the age after 50 suffer from it. What is it and why is it so common? Uterine prolapse is the change of uterine physical placement. It moves lower than it should be normally placed because of the weakening of pelvic muscles and uterine ligaments. These factors can even lead to womb falling and displacement of vagina. Usually uterine prolapse goes along with a number of discomforting feelings such as pain in the lower part of stomach, urination disorder or pathologic vaginal extractions. Usually the gynecologist diagnoses it and determines where the treatment should be conservative or surgical.
Uterine prolapse can be present in different degrees:
- Cervix uteri can be detected above the interlabial space, but doesn’t come out of it.
- Cervix uteri can be seen in the interlabial space while undergoing physical tension, heavy weight lifting, sneezing or coughing.
- Cervix uteri and partially uterine body come out of interlabial space.
- Uterus fully comes outside.
The reasons of such pathology are connected with anatomic defects of pelvic organs that can appear after:
- Pelvic muscles damage.
- Birth traumas (depends very much on the complications while delivery and surgical manipulations performed to solve the problem).
- Surgical operations on pelvic organs.
- Deep crotch tears.
- Wrong innervation of urogenital diaphragm.
- Congenial flaws of pelvic organs.
- Lack of estrogen (the problem occurring during menopause).
Depending on the degree of prolapse, the treatment can be conservative – special physical exercises, hormonal therapy, massage, ointments with metabolites and estrogen. But in more serious cases pelvic floor reconstruction or vaginalplasty are required. The reconstruction can be performed with the help of patient’s own tissues or, if needed, with the help of artificial material, which won’t be felt as a foreign body and will solve the problem the same way.
