A few years ago, I was diagnosed with depression. While this experience has had a major impact on my life, there are still times I feel down and don't know how to deal with my emotions.

I share some of the things that have helped me overcome the dark days and find light at the end of the tunnel.

  • Find a support system

Depression can be very isolating. Having a strong support system can be the difference between life and death. If you don't have any family or friends who are willing to listen and offer support, consider making new connections to create that connection.

  • Don't let your depression rule your life

The best thing you can do when you feel sad is to do something fun. If you find yourself in an emotional state, it's important to be around positive people and places.

Even if your depression is severe, you can still do the things you love. If you don't feel like going out, go to a movie theater or attend a live concert. If you find yourself with the urge to cry, cry in front of your mirror or do something that makes you laugh instead.

  • Focus on the little things

During depression, people often complain about the big things in life. They focus on all the things they don't have instead of the amazing things they do have. That's not the type of attitude you want to adopt. Instead, start focusing on the smaller things in life.

  • Listen to your favorite songs

Music can be a great way to release emotions and bring happiness back into your life.

  • Get a pet

Animals and pets have been proven to lower blood pressure and reduce stress. This goes double if the pet is a dog. You should consider getting a dog or cat if you're struggling with depression.

  • Try going to the gym

Exercise is proven to help people with depression. The simple act of getting in shape also improves your mood and lowers the chance of becoming physically ill.

  • Get a massage

Massages have a long history of relieving pain and stress. It also helps stimulate the nervous system.

  • Meditate

Meditation has been proven to lower stress levels and improve overall mental health.

  • Spend time outside

Being outside can be a powerful motivator.

  • Take a bubble bath

Bubble baths can help relax your mind and body.

  • Go on a road trip

Road trips can be a great way to spend time away from technology and away from negative influences. You can go on your own or take a friend with you.

  • Take a drive

Taking a drive can help clear your mind and put you in a different mindset.

  • Sleep well

You might think you need 7 hours of sleep, but the truth is, you probably only need 6.5.

  • Take naps
