Feeding The Pelicans!

This is my entry for this week's Feathered Friday challenge organized by @melinda010100

The images (below) were taken at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on the Gold Coast, Australia. This world renowned Sanctuary was built in 1947 but was known back then, as the Currumbin Bird Sanctuary. It has seen many improvements and extensions since then.

Their miniature railway has been operating since 1964 so this is a great way to take in the amazing sights which cover an area of 18.728 hectares (46.28 acres) We were fortunate enough to time our visit to watch the pelicans being fed.

And were they hungry? Other wildlife lined up for a feed. Can you see the outline of an eel in the water behind these ravenous pelicans? They didn't want to miss out either.

A young staff member was in the middle of feeding the pelicans when a very friendly cormorant flew over and landed on her shoulder. He timed his visit just right too as there were plenty of fish for him too. Apparently he had been injured and was nursed back to health at the sanctuary and although he was set free, he often coincided his catch up with with his rescuer at feeding time. Very convenient.

A white heron stood back waiting for his chance to catch a fish thrown to him as he wasn't very keen to get caught up in the feathered feeding frenzy nearby.

I love getting close up to these magnificent birds. Their huge beaks are quite transparent, their eyes are large and their heads are covered by hundreds of short white feathers.

The largest pelican in the group was named 'Bossy,' and judging by these images I think you can find him easily enough.

Here is am image of a pelican perched on a lamp post. I used digital effects to my original photo to produce this unique look.

How fun to be there at feeding time! Great photos! Are eels really smart enough to know to show up for a free meal? Wouldn't a Pelican eat an eel? As you can tell I know nothing about eels! 🤔

It was fun Melinda. I am assuming that eels would be part of a pelicans diet but they were obviously more interested in the fish that the staff member was offering them. They don't give them too much because they realize its important to not interrupt their natural feeding habits for survival.

Wow, awesome birds Trudee! This is another bird I don't get to see here. Lovely!

Thanks very much Keith. We have a lot of pelicans in our area and I love seeing them around and getting photos of them.

Very nice post and beautiful photos!! That eel looks quite large!!

Thank you @rynow Yes, that eel and a few others in the water were big enough to ensure i stayed well away. 😊

Wow! I wish I could get that close to the white pelicans that pass through on their migration route. They're really shy of humans. We don't get the black ones, though, just the white. Those are definitely some beaky birds! Got to love that hairdo, too.

Some of our pelican are more bold than others and these ones do not hold back at feeding times. Thanks so much for your visit and support my friend 😊
