This is a male hairy woodpecker, the female
lacks the red patch on it's head.
Very similar to the downy, which is a bit
smaller, and with a much shorter beak.
They are usually seen on the ......
tree trunk and larger branches of trees.
Found throughout most of North America,
and in the higher elevations in .....
Central America.
Woodpeckers are the most interesting birds I think. You just have to respect that hammering noise. We see the cartoon-esque ones with the big red head plume here.
Pileated ? We have them here, but not very common, rather shy.
I love the noise they make too!
Yes. They do seem a bit shy. It is always tricky to get a good view.
A bird feeder would attract many, probably not pleated though... squirrel proof is better...

Beautiful bird! Looks just like the one who hammers away on the telephone pole in front of my house. I see by the map that their range includes this area. I love it when you include those maps by the way. Thanks for entering Feathered Friday. voted & resteemed

I hope to be able to get a picture of a woodpecker in Alaska one of theses days, I have seen them, but never when I had a camera, now I will be ready for them and any other birds.
A bird feeder would bring them to you... lol

Howdy sir karbon! Those are great shots of that bird. Do you know why it's called Hairy?
Good question! It has tiny feathers on its legs and upper jaw... you would have to be a hardcore birder know that.. lol
haha! howdy again sir karbon! Yeah I thought I saw what looked like a hairy jaw but you're right. . that takes a good close up shot to even see it. Every interesting, thank you!
