River Bank Wading Bird Paradise
Towering Goliath Heron
River walk became eventful turning the corner seeing the slate -grey plumage with chestnut feathers, a giant wading bird of our waters. The Goliath Heron (Afrikaans: Reusereier) are the largest of all living herons, height of 135 cms, weight around 4300 gms.
One yellow eye watching us across a short span of river bank, not feeling compromised out in the open, also not too happy with human and dog invasion of his prime time twenty meters away.

Stilt like black legs perched firmly on the reeds, black sharp beak, this bird can teach us a thing or two about the virtue of patience, solitary it will stand motionless in shallow water for long periods waiting to capture it's fishy meals.

Taking flight, obviously not so happy with too many around, took off unfortunately down the river toward the sea not affording a photograph in flight.
The Goliath heron will stick close to water moving up and down the river, on occasion joining other wading birds.

Being out on a walk seeing one exceptional bird sighting always makes my day, apparently they do eat the odd insects while out on the banks of the Amanzimtoti River.

What lovely colours the Goliath Heron has, you were very fortunate seeing this bird!
Lovely photos and post, I always look for the African proverb at the end, love the wisdom @joanstewart:)
We have had the good fortune of seeing them a few times on the rivers down here Lizelle, the colours are stunning.
Cool I had never heard of the goliath heron. Herons are such awesome birds. I grew up around Great Blue Herons that would stalk the tidepools of my hometown in Alaska. Great pictures, I love the blue and red coloration.
Striking colours on this bird, we are fortunate in having about 7 species of heron and similar to the heron 3 smaller species of egret. Great blue heron must be lovely to watch seeking out food in your beautiful wilderness.
Are they the same as Flamingos? They look similar to them

They are pretty cool, I would imagine standing next to a 6' man they would make it to shoulder height
One awesome bird! Thanks for sharing!
Regal bird, glad you enjoyed it.
Wow! Beautiful photos Lady Joan!
This time you have really got some very good pictures.
I love the red neck which distinguishes them.
Blessings!
Bird watching with dogs is a bit challenging, not trained yet like my other dogs go quietly, was thrilled to see I had captured something worth sharing Stephen.
