Thank you kind sir! I'm using an older Sony A77 and a 70x300mm lens. Because it's not a full frame sensor that lens is actually 110x450 mm on that camera. It's a pretty decent reach but not large in size at all. I can carry it around and shoot without a tripod easily. Birders tend to use much larger lenses and high quality cameras.
Oh, very interesting, thanks for the explanation sir rossfletcher. yeah those big huge lens would be kind of heavy to carry around all day, not to mention attract attention!
People use tripods with those big ones. It's a lot more relaxing way of doing things. You wont get as many different angles and shots but you can enjoy yourself and not stress your neck and back : )
