Feathered Friday. King penguins. / Королевские пингвины.

King penguins (Latin Aptenodytes patagonicus) are very large birds. Slightly smaller than the largest imperial. From 1 meter to 1.4. I photographed these serious birds at the Berlin Zoo.

Королевские пингвины (лат. Aptenodytes patagonicus)– очень крупные птицы. Чуть поменьше самых больших императорских. От 1 метра до 1,4. Этих важных птичек я сфотографировала в Берлинском зоопарке.

Since penguins live in cold places, nature has endowed them with properties that help them calmly withstand cold weather. So, they have 4 layers of feathers growing with a very large density: approximately 10 feathers per 1 square centimeter. The upper layer of feathers is saturated with fat, which secrete special sebaceous glands. Due to this, feathers do not get wet in water. The bottom layers retain heat.

Так как живут пингвины в холодных местах, природа наделила их свойствами, помогающими спокойно выдерживать морозы. Так, у них 4 слоя перьев, растущих с очень большой плотностью: примерно, 10 пёрышек на 1 квадратный сантиметр. Верхний слой перьев пропитан жиром, который выделяют специальные сальные железы. Благодаря этому перья не намокают в воде. Нижние слои сохраняют тепло.

Watching penguins is always very interesting. In nature, few can see them, because they live on islands around Antarctica.	Наблюдать за пингвинами всегда очень интересно. В природе их увидеть мало кто может, потому что живут они на островах вокруг Антарктиды.
In zoos they always attract attention.	В зоопарках они всегда привлекают внимание.

People actively exterminated these large penguins. But in the twentieth century they came to their senses and, as a result of the protection measures the population were restored. Now their number is estimated at more than 2 million individuals.	Люди активно истребляли этих крупных пингвинов. Но в двадцатом веке спохватились и в результате защиты мер по охране популяции восстановили. Сейчас их численность оценивается в цифру более 2 миллионов особей.
And in many zoos they are.	Ну, и во многих зоопарках они есть.
