In the first article of Fashion Friday I inaugurated the series talking about how Japanese fashion has influenced today's modern fashion. Undoubtedly Japanese fashion has become a staple in the fashion world.
I would like to continue the cycle and talk about my favorite 3 designers that I think should be appreciated and you MUST know if you love fashion!
There are a ton of Japanese designers but I have short listed it to my personal 3 favorites. Street fashion along with luxury street fashion may have been a brainstorm child of the below mentioned artists. Be it avant garde, vintage, bohemian, luxury fashion; these designers have left their mark that will forever remain a blueprint in the fashion industry.
YOHJI YAMAMOTO
"'I think that my men's clothes look as good on women as my women's clothing" -Yamomoto, New York times 1983
Famous for his collaborations with Adidas (Y-3), Hermes and Mandarina Duck, he was especially popular in Tokyo in his early fashion career. He specializes in avant garde fashion. Black is lazy, but mysterious.
He started designing with the idea to protect a woman's body from men's glare or cold wind by designing men's clothes for women. Man, is this guy interesting.
Reportedly made over a 100$ million in 2007, but because of poor finance managers the business took a divehead first into a concrete pool in 2009. But eventually stood up again...because true talent can never be buried!
TAKAHIRO MIYASHITA
First known for his local Japanese brand Number Nine inspired by Beetles- Revolution Nine, he is considered equivalent to a musical genius in the fashion world. After selling off Number NIne he emerged again with a brand that was again aptly name THE SOLOIST. He is the SOLO designer in the brand, and is absolutely SOLO when it comes to the designs. Very exclusive! The brand is a physical form his grunge-induced ideas, from futuristic to modernized cowboy style outfits, it explores each and every corner of the street fashion world. A little swirl of luxury doesn't stay untouched. Miyashita remains a huge inspiration to upcoming Japanese designers as well as the western world has had a lot to learn from his work. It's impossible to pinpoint his style, but always has a basis for it apparently- which makes
The Soloist mystical and highly looked upon in it's space.
MASAYAKI INO
If you have keeping up with fashion news then Masayaki, creator of
DOUBLET, isn't a stranger to you. He has recently won LVMH award for new designers. Today he is a major name in the western world, with multiple celebrities from the western hiphop world working closely with him. He studies various eras of fashion and changes in trends and produces a whole different product as result of his learning process; which stands out in its space as unique and marked as his own. His base comes from the 90's and 2000's inspired style and culture which as a result defies norms and takes street fashion to the next level of lux-esque street fashion.
HONORABLE MENTION: MIHARA YASUHIRO
All I am going to say is that he has been doing the balenciaga thing before balenciaga even became a thing.
