Issues of talcum safety are by no means recent.

I remember the1972 “affaire du talc Morhange” in France, when two hundred infants died and others suffered lifelong sequelae due to the improper dosage of a toxic component in the Morhange talcum powder, hexachlorophene, a powerful antiseptic. In case you are wondering, the verdict was five people condemned to prison terms ranging from one to twelve months (after appeal), then were granted amnesty in 1981. Going further back to1952, also in France, over seventy infants died and many more suffered consequences because of a batch of Baumol talcum powder that was contaminated with arsenic (!). In the Morhange and Baumol cases, the poisonings were either due to contamination or miscalculation. In contrast, there are no such mitigating factors in the Johnson & Johnson case. I decided to do some quick research on talcum powder. I googled “facts talc” and “facts baby powder”, and pretty much top of the list I landed on: http://www.factsabouttalc.com/#about "At last some facts!" I thought. Not so fast! Look at the top right corner and you find a discrete “Johnson & Johnson Family of Consumer Companies” logo. Click on it and you land on https://www.jnj.com/healthcare-products/consumer”, the J&J website. So much for objectivity.

Given that a powder cannot be confined to mere topical administration by its very nature it is inevitable that some will send up in your or your infant’s lungs. Personally, I’ll abstain. There are other methods to have soft skin without poisonous particles distributed in the air for me to breathe in. And if one day I decide to have a break from this Alice in Wonderland - 1984 world with some toxic white powder going up my nostrils, it sure as hell won’t be Johnson & Johnson’s.
