We're building a dystopia just to make people click on ads | Zeynep Tufekci

Fascinating video - not mine of course.

Commentary: In my view the root of the problem is that the algorithms are working for the benefit of the companies and primarily advertisers. If we get to control what algorithms we use in order to serve ourselves content, then those algorithms can work for our benefit instead.

Wow! What an awesome lecture. Everything she said there is true and that is why we need to embrace the decentralized tech as opposed to the centralized system.

What if we get a decentralized search engine like google?

Thanks for sharing @demotruk. It's been long.

Two days ago was my birthday.

I don't think we will have decentralized search engines. What we might have is open source search engines, which as long as the incentives are made correctly, work for us instead of surreptitiously working on behalf of others.

Ok. That will be fine. The system we have now is broken and they allow people see only what they want them to see. That's the reason so many people's voice go unheard for years.

There are so many atrocities happening here in n Nigeria and each time people share it on facebook, it gets pulled down or hidden.

The world is broken. I hope to see and work for a better world before I die.

Once more thanks for sharing.

Expecting my birthday gift from you. 😂

Oh, I didn't realize it was your birthday. Happy Birthday! Today is the birthday of the Steem blockchain as well..

Lol! Thanks for the upvotes my old time friend!

My birthday is not today, it was on the 21st. I posted it here on steem.

Makes me feel more comfortable with Steemit due to the lack of filters/algorithms and that it just throws everything at you!

We will need filters though. We need some way to cut through the noise and see the content we're interested in; otherwise we are using our time ineffectively. The issue really is to have 'filters' that work for us not for others. Perhaps that means all filters should be necessarily simple, though I think AI can be made to benefit us instead of advertisers as long as users have more control (and some standard of digital literacy). Currently I use my feed as a simplistic filter.

Yes we do. They should be owned and managed by us though for the most part, if it's any more than by category or pending payout.

I don't want to go down a Jew hating rabbit hole!

Seems like a bit of what we are discussing could be on its way with the communities Fork: https://steemit.com/steem/@dannyzen/steem-update-communities-are-coming

It's interesting to think that the "rabbit hole" metaphor we've heard so much lately may be a trap laid out by social media algorithms. Whichever particular rabbit hole you've found yourself in.

At least I am glad that I deleted my Facebook account several years ago, and the crypto bug I picked up was via Reddit. Reddit has gotten a lot more controlled and corporate recently, but it wasn't so bad at the time I got into it.

We keep hearing about "rabbit holes" and "red pills" and "waking up", in various different movements and ideologies. It seems linked, and perhaps this is the link.

Interesting!

Just want to point out that i don't think i've ever been down a Jew hating rabbit hole :) It was a random example, and a figure of speech, but could well be the influence of media, and not Alice.

LOL I know, she talked about that 'rabbit hole' in the video. We all seem to be finding ourselves down rabbit holes lately though.

Hey @demotruk,
we really need to do away with the old system of advertizing that enriches only the companies in a centralized manner. what about those who the ads are served to? What happens to them? They are the market, they purchase all these products. Their data is sold by facebook and Google for billions of dollars. Their data was used to win the last American election?
When do we get a fully-formed decentralized world that can displace all these giants? Only time will tell.
Thanks for sharing!

The only thing is that on Steem we are making all our data public by default. We get some reward for it, but those companies will still have the data to target us with. I think we need a paradigm shift; perhaps it's ok for them to have our data as long as they can't simply take our attention. If we see our attention as our property, ours to use and to sell on our own terms, then we may see the upside of our transparency without as much of the downside.

...On steem...companies will still have the data to target us with

I kinda agree with you. Our attention is the currency eventually. Its something we all can control by ourselves individually in addition to AI support and coding.

I personally have stopped clicking ads. I use brave browser. And yes there's a presearch that is a decentralized search engine using cryptos to pay for key words etcz.

The world is changing towards the blockchain but we all have to endeavour to change from withing too. Control our instincts and resolve our emotions; only then can we be at peace.

Thanks for sharing!!

A very interesting talk, especially these days after the Facebook scandal and its "respect" for privacy... Thanks For sharing.. Keep it up dear.

Very nice .

thanks for the information
I wish you success

I will always speak against predatory advertising. We deserve to be allowed to choose what we want to see on our advert box. Anything different from this is from the wicked one

You just have to know how to tame the bitch..😁
