Here's Why I'm NOT #DeleteFacebook, and Why You Shouldn't Either! 😎👍

Trending everywhere on social media and the blogosphere is the hashtag #DeleteFacebook. I get it -- you don't want major corporations and political entities stealing your information. However, deleting your Facebook account is not the most helpful nor productive thing you could do.

Here's the harsh reality -- deleting your Facebook does absolutely nothing to the company's popularity. And let's also be real: you don't think Twitter, Snapchat, or any other social media platform violates your privacy on a consistent basis? They're all one and the same!

Let's look at some hard numbers.

How many people are going to permanently delete their Facebook account? Perhaps a million? Okay...that's a big figure, until you realize that Facebook would only lose 0.05% of its user base. Mark Zuckerberg would notice those losses like a fart in the wind...an extremely mild inconvenience, if that.

Let's get really crazy...let's say that the entire United States population decides to delete their Facebook account. It will never happen, trust me. FB is too ingrained in our culture. Nevertheless, even if the U.S. went all #DeleteFacebook, that would have less than a 17% impact to its total user base.

Yes, that's a lot, but put that into perspective. If either Twitter or Snapchat lost the U.S. population, their user base would have a 100% negative impact -- these two platforms would cease to exist.

And at Steemit's current annual growth rate, losing a U.S. population would require more than 1,300 years to catch back up.

I'm sorry to disappoint but #DeleteFacebook will do nothing to curb Facebook's social media dominance.

You're only hurting yourself if you #DeleteFacebook!

It's true...jumping off the ledge with "morality lemmings" will only hurt you. As I just said above, it won't impact Facebook in the slightest.

This is like trying to fight Mike Tyson in his prime, and you're likely no Mike Tyson. You're going to get your ass handed to you, and you have virtually zero chance of winning. And you'll be paid zero dollars irrespective of the outcome. What's the upside?

It's a rhetorical question, but there is no upside.

In the meantime, if you run your own business, or have a professional presence on Facebook, this is still THE platform to advertise your stuff. Heck, even just having a casual presence allows people to find you and give you an opportunity to re-connect with long-lost friends and acquaintances.

That right there is sentimental value that you're trashing by simply reacting emotionally to the #DeleteFacebook campaign.

Hear me out...

I'm not saying anything bad about you if you already deleted your Facebook account, or if you're in the process of doing so. What I am saying is that if you're going to do this, do it because you want to, not because you fell into the emotional traps of a trendy movement.

Facebook has its faults, but again, let's be real -- almost every company violates your privacy in some way. Do you honestly believe that the internet is not used to spy on you? This shit has been going on since the internet was born! So stop with the melodrama, take a deep, long breath, and reexamine why you're doing this.

If it's because you think you're going to hurt Zuckerberg, he's unhurtable; even if he was, you're not that important to do it. If you want to be part of a movement that will destroy Facebook, relax and realize it ain't happening. Remember the "We are the 99%" movement? Yeah...

As for Steemit, look at the growth statistics. We're maturing at a time when we should be growing exponentially! So no, Steemit will not overtake Facebook anytime soon, and probably not in our lifetimes.

STEEM on if you want, but please STEEM because you want to...not because you think you're part of a revolution.

I myself NEVER joined Facebook to begin with because I knew they were corporate evil. Years ago they sold everyone's data to the US government for use in facial recognition technology and nobody was told about it until much later. The fact that they allowed another massive data breach is not surprising in the least to me since I know their model: COLLECT DATA, SELL DATA.

The reason why it is FREE to join Facebook is because YOU ARE THE PRODUCT! Open your eyes people.

100% agree, but the internet already collects that data anyways. Just because we're not on Facebook won't protect us from government oversight.

Yeah, Facebook isn't hurting that badly, it should be back to full strength within a month or two in my opinion. It is a huge part of our culture, and I don't think it is going away anytime soon. It is odd that most people are just now realizing that they have been collecting mountains of data. That is one of the main reasons that they are such a valuable company. Also, I totally agree, by deleting Facebook you are only hurting yourself. Steem is a great platform, but it still has a long way to go. It is still in its infancy, and far from being mainstream.

It is odd that most people are just now realizing that they have been collecting mountains of data.

Totally agree! I'm not defending Facebook, nor its practices, but come on...is the next step that we're going to delete Norton because they created the viruses from which we need their services? LOL!

I don't have the add but when I need a pic ill use it, letting the site work for me. but I don't need it so much other things you can use. now, and steemit is growing with DTUBE. nice post

Awesome post! I like it :) 👍
