Suggestion for those who are upset with the "experiment"
Steemit does have a clone, which is called Golos (Russian for "Voice"). But it is not exclusively Russian, they allow you to post in English as well.
8374 Steemers were given automatic accounts on Golos, as part of their licence agreement. If you are one of these, then you can log into Golos with your steemit account name and password. To find out if you are on the list, check out this dropbox file, press Ctrl F to generate a "find" box on the bottom left of your browser, and type in your steemit name. When you log in, you'll probably be pleasantly surprised to see that they have given you a distribution as part of the licensing agreement.
You can adjust the settings so that you view your wallet etc in English. And you can trade any golos you earn on Bittrex.
People have nothing to lose by trying it out and posting articles on there, while they wait for the "experiment" to end.

I've made a couple of posts over there and using an online translator it seems a friendly site to those who don't speak Russian.
How well does Google Chrome's auto-translate work there?
They seemed to understand me and I just put an appology if my Russian was poor it was because I was using a translator.

Hmm. My account was created before this automatic access date, but I can't log in with my Steemit info anyway. I can't access the dropbox file to double-check that database either.
I think there was a cut-off, they made accounts for people who had curation awards. I think there is a google drive page - https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8c9qXXnqgeDd25XWVE1TkJnSzA/view which you can download. Only 8337 accounts made the cut
