Exhaust Events - Questions and Thoughts
This is a very quick post to start a dialogue about how Exhaust Events -- specifically for now -- Race Events, should be handled.
I'm going to through out some very quick thoughts / questions, and I'd be keen to hear the communities thoughts!
Do you think, for race events, that the activity needs to be recorded w/ a GPS tracker to be eligible?
- Or are we okay with the "honor system" -- assuming that people wont lie about their times?
- Should there be two pools -- activities submitted w/ GPS / other forms of tracking, and another for those that enter times manually?
How should the prize pool be allocated?
- On a "winner take all basis"?
- Have it so the top 30% of participants win something?
- Should there be a prize for the individuals that train for the event the most? The beauty of running is in the journey towards race day, and not the race itself, afterall.
For future events -- would there be interest in having different 'categories'?
- There could be a "beginners" category / prizepool, an "intermediate" category / prizepool, and a "competetive" category / prizepool.... This could be a 20/30/50 (or something similar split) of the overall prize-pool?
For the race itself... There will likely need to be some 'calibration' of each users specific route;
- It would be unfair to have someone that just sprints downhill for 5km straight, and others are running a mix of undulating hills;
- Should tracks be required to be a loop -- starting and finishing at the same point, which would effectively ensure that any course has a net-zero elevation change;
- The above would require GPS tracking...
- If there is no requirement to be a loop, then some formula will have to be applied accounting for running downhill / uphill...
Also -- as an FYI...
I've recently modified things so that rewards earned by posts written by @exhaust don't directly go into the reward distribution to athletes. This is in an effort to powerup @exhaust to a point where it can claim & create accounts -- or to stockpile Steem, which can be used for upcoming achievement rewards (SBI shares) or paying 3Steem for account creations.
I prefer that honestly... the previous system was very generous, and great for athletes, but I think the exhaust account needs to get to a point where it has a healthy upvote to really encourage activity.

Thanks for the input, Eddie!
I agree that GPS is preferrable to honor system -- it'll get gamed eventually.
Categories would be nice too -- I'm an optimistic person -- but I'm also not crazy enough to think that I could outrun yourself, or Vince.
Elevation is generally tracked by GPS -- but is a bit hit or miss sometimes -- especially if someone is going over a bridge or running along some place with a steep bank (like along a river or something).
Hmmm... lots of complexity here.
I personally prefer a Top 3 or top 30% prize pool over a winner takes all. I do also like the idea of the different categories, because, quite frankly, I don't want to go up against Vince... and I'm sure that's the case for most less-disciplined runners.
While I like the race idea, there are obviously lots of logistics to work out, and while our little group is small and trustworthy, if you got to the point we're you're putting up decent prizes then you'd have to incorporate some sort of checking. Instead, I'm wondering if a hark back to the Move Mob days would be more inspiring to people... they pledge the distance they intend to run over a period of time, maybe even pay a 5 Steem entry fee, and then the steem pledged by the people who don't make it is divided up for the people who do make it.
Or, like Fitbit's achievements, have a race to the first person to hit the top of Everest or something...
I'm not sure of the technicalities, but would Exhaust be able to calculate an Exhaust score based on elevation, etc... and weigh people's runs accordingly?
I'm a fan of the "Top 3" idea as well -- or "Top X -- Depending on how many people have registered"... almost like a poker tournament prize structure.
The Move Mob / Cumulative Challenge idea is definitely do-able. Probably would be easier to set up / calculate than races, to be honest. I'll put some thought into the "pledge" system! Thanks!
Exhaust could almost certainly come up with a "Starting point elevation" and a "Finish line elevation", and find the "average elevation change" over the length of each persons course and assign a time penalty (or time bonus, if you're a lunatic and decide to run uphill instead of downhill) on top of the activity duration.
Yeah, I've heard of some apps that are doing really well where people are betting on themselves to complete a fitness goal... the whole thing about people putting more effort into not losing money really plays out here. Not sure how magic internet money works in this scenario, but it's worth a shot.
One again great work and am really enjoying the community.
My thoughts are:

About other questions - there are too many of them. Keep it simple and gradual :)
About rewards - I am more for the participation than for winning it all approach.
Yes, something like seasonal league combined with weekly or monthly events would be nice.
Again, don't complicate things. Step by step :)
About difficulty weighted result - STrava is doing something like this with its GAP:
