As @mysearchisover correctly states, You're allowed to upvote your own posts, though voting your own comments is frowned upon and will get you flagged.
I think it's mostly legal to use a small amount of bots, is your decision but the larger the vote the more unwanted attention it will bring you..
I wont downvote your post as you seem new and dont know much yet. That guide you are using is out of the ark! There doesnt seem anything recently to use so I can sympathise.
I use this link for downvotes, it explains why the post has been downvoted.

Welcome to Steemit. Where downvoting is generally frowned upon unless you are not expecting a return and want to promote something.
Check my activity. I did not pay for a vote. Someone else paid for some minuscule meaningless worthless upvote. I have no control over how other people decide to waste their steem.

I meant it.. no sarcasm, we need new people, just be careful who you pick as a mentor. Some are better than others, no names mentioned.
