Plazas

in #esteem5 years ago (edited)

A plaza is a public meeting space, for the local people to meet, to socialize, as well as serving a variety of other activities – like performances and shows, festive activities, a market place etc… It can be a big place, or a small place.

“The symbolic functions, both political and religious are of great importance in these spaces, being chosen for the celebration of coronations, executions, demonstrations, processions, canonizations ... They are often chosen to build commemorative monuments or statues, as they are singular and adequate spaces for the mechanisms of maintenance of history memory.” - Wikipedia

I guess in the olden days, it was also used mainly for spreading religion and government propaganda, and also for the government to keep an eye on the populace.

Benalmadena has many of these plazas, also called squares. Nowadays, the Food and Beverage outlets have taken over most of the plazas. The plazas have now become dining venues. Cafes and restaurants put up tables in the plazas. In some ways, these plazas are still serving their purpose – people coming to dine, and socialize. Here are pictures of some of the plazas in the area.

These plazas have names. I don't remember most of them - especially if they are Spanish sounding names. I will know where is the plaza when people mention it but I can't remember the name.

This is the Bonaza Plaza.

And this is another side of the Bonaza Plaza. So, the Bonaza Plaza is quite a big area.

I know don't the name of this Plaza. It is a small one. Maybe it doesn't have a name.

Plaza Espana. This is a nice little area. Very local.

square 5.jpg
Plaza de la Mezquita – Mezquita means mosque. At some point in time, this must have been a mosque, or converted from a mosque.

This is the far end of the Plaza de la Mezquita. It has got a stage. Sometimes, they have events, and sometimes bands performed on stage. As you can see this is quite a big plaza. So, if there were any shows or performances, the plaza is full of people. Good business for the eateries.

This is another big plaza - Plaza Adolfo Suarez. It is just behind the Benalmadena train station. Fares are held here sometimes, during local festive celebrations.

Howdy sir Vincent! man, I really like the pavers on that last big plaza. And that one has a pool table! I like those, that really looks like a Spain type of thing.

Oh! and I forgot but on that other post of Spain famous things, bull fighting is sick so I'm glad it's going away.

Indeed, I too am glad that bull fighting is going away.

Yes sir, great minds think alike!
