The struggles of work.

More or less the struggle to turn up every day in a job where nobody really wants to be there. The problem is that I actually like my job but they make it so difficult to actually do it. Why do large corporations have so little regard for staff these days that they no longer care about the people they employ?

I've worked for a large retailer for 10 years now. My anniversary is on the 13th October where they have organized an event for the people that have reached that milestone this year and the higher up management. I probably won't bother going to it as it's 2.5 hours away and only a night at the dog track. It's nothing special as we do that here all the time anyway. I'm young enough that I actually go out plenty of nights anyway so spending one with the company suits doesn't exactly fill me with enthusiasm.

I started in the job ten years back and did my college course in business to get a management job with them. After getting my business degree I was fortunate to get a permanent contract with the company which was very good at the time. For a 23 year old whose friends were all still in college I was living life well. I've worked in multiple stores and helped at events across the country. I've been on training courses and trained hundreds of staff over the years. Been part of new store openings and worked with people at all levels within the corporation. I enjoyed the work but things have changed since I started.

In the beginning the work was tough but rewarding. It's still tough work but not rewarding any more. Most jobs have good and bad sides to them but over the years we have seen the greed from the top strip away a lot of the benefits, bonuses and positives to the job. Target have tightened every year as they try to get the last drop of sweat out of every employee that they can. That wouldn't be so bad but I can see the money that gets wasted at other levels in the organization and yet they won't give us the man power to run the stores to a decent standard.

That's the real de-motivator.

Not being allowed to the do our jobs properly and to a decent standard. When I do a job I like to do it properly but all we do these days is fight fires. Going from one day to the next, trying to keep the doors open instead of improving them and giving the customers a better experience.

It's sad to say this but any customer that we had this week wouldn't have gotten a great experience.

We didn't have enough staff to get the stock onto the shelves and that was with everybody working extra hours and 6 days in some cases. All the while one of our trainee managers was timing people scratching their arses down in cork to cut more hours with 20 other people and we were told couldn't come back to store even when we didn't have enough people to run the place. One of the other stores in the area has had most of their staff leave this year and can't get any new ones. They had 9 interviews set up this week and 1 person showed up. There is something gone very wrong at the core of the company and it's starting to leak down through everything else.

When you are losing all of your long term experienced staff it says a lot about the place and then can't even get new bodies you have a serious problem.

I know a few more that will be gone in the near future as well. They no longer care about the well being of the people working for them and since they have cut most of the benefits that kept people working there it's only going to get worse. It might be time to start looking around myself at this stage as if we continue to lose all of the good staff I have worked with then it's only going to get worse and no reason to stay. There is plenty work out there now and my experience would get me into some where new very fast.

Rant over for now!!!
But it needs to be put out there sometimes to clear the head. Lets hope STEEM goes to $100 at some stage and won't have to worry about it any more. Full time steemian in the future.

They all want more with less and the breaking point for most will come before they realize it. Despite a growing competition for talent, they will continue doing it if their pockets continue to do well.

They only care about the end result at the moment and that is the money. It's only a matter of time before some of the companies hit a tipping point and lose the staff needed to run the place successfully. I can see it happening here soon.
