The largest ore dock in the world

in #esteem6 years ago
I posted this almost a year ago, when I was new to @eSteem and not many people saw it. (If you are an old friend who has seen it, I apologize)
I love these photos, and wanted to post it again.

Ashland, Wisconsin at one time had four ore docks, three of which were all wood structures, built in the late 1800s and removed long ago.. The last remaining ore dock was immense. My photos have been taken over a period of time, over various trips to Lake Superior.

For perspective, the light poles lining the top of the dock are 30 feet tall.

You can still see the pilings from the old wooden docks.

Before the demolition of the Central dock was finished in 2013, which left behind just the concrete base, the ore dock was 80 feet high, towering above Lake Superior and 59 feet wide and had four railroad tracks on it. It was said to have been the largest concrete structure of its kind in the world. The timber trestle approach was 1000 ft long. Iron ore, mined in the UP of Michigan was loaded into ore boats, the last one in 1965.

The first 900-foot section was built in 1916 and was doubled in size in 1925.

Ore would arrive by train with each rail car having a door in its bottom to drop ore into one of the 300, 34 ft long chutes that would swing down to load the ore onto the waiting freighters.
Each railroad car held 50 to 70 tons of ore

The concrete is stained red from the dust of the iron iron ore.

I haven't been back there since the dock was demolished.

Wooah! That is an amazing structure, never seen any like this before. Thanks for sharing this.

It was impressive, for sure! I understand that they had to take it down because of the liability to the town, but it is sad that it is gone

holy mackerel! immensely colossal!

Isn't it impressive? I am so glad I got photos before they tore it down.

It is good that you publish it again for your new followers because it is a great structure and the good things like these photos are worth repeating.

Many thanks, my friend! I posted so many of my favorite photos early on when I only knew a few people here. I'll bet many of us did that!

Amazing my dear Melinda!

Many thanks! It must have been incredible to see it when they were loading a ship!

Wow! Thank you for considering us, your new followers! It is a gigantic dock, I cannot believe it! Thank you for sharing it to us! And for giving us a free tour! Hahaha! 😉😂

Many thanks! Now it is a historical tour, since it no longer exists.

At first I thought this was the ore dock in Marquette. They look very similar. Nice pictures.

I love how you drive under the one in Marquette when you go to the park! They still use that one, right?

Yes, they still use it. It is fun to sit in the park and watch the freighters come in.

Wow! That's definitely the biggest dock I've ever seen!
Oh and I'm one of these people who haven't seen the post when you posted it before so thanks for doing it again, would be a big loss not to be seen by many people :)
