30th US Vice President- Charles Gates Dawes

in #esteem6 years ago

. I had never heard of Charles Gates Dawes (August 27, 1865-April 23, 1951) But it seems he was the 30th United States vice president under Calvin Coolidge and won a Nobel Peace Prize for World War I reparations. His Chateauesque lakefront home in Evanston, Illinois is a museum and is quite magnificent.

Dawes pursued two careers during his lifetime, one in business and banking, the other in public service. He wrote 9 books and was an accomplished musician.

Built in 1894, this lakefront mansion was his home. He was a devoted family man and had a daughter and a son and was devasted when his son drowned in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin while he was home from Princeton University during summer vacation.

The house is a National Historic Landmark.

Because of the Thanksgiving holiday here, I will need to delay the shadow contest by one day. So you have extra time to take that smoke Shadow picture!

Charles Gates Dawes

Never even read the name. lol

Beautiful home, you really got some great photos.

I once toured the former Texas Governor's home of Governor Jim Hogg. He was governor in 1891. His daughter's names are named Ura Hogg and Ima Hogg

What was he smoking? lol

His biography says that

'in 1887 he moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, to participate in the advantages of a fast-growing economy.

Those poor Hogg girls! Can you imagine giving a baby such horrible names?

I know, right? maybe they were common names
Hey a Lincoln man yay!

Beautiful. Hard to imagine people lived like this. I associate rooms like these with colleges. That would make a wonderful library and the dining room. Wow

They certainly must have had live in help! That banister alone would take a week to dustbin Im sure it was mentioned.but I have forgotten how many people they kept on staff

howdy melinda010100! oh my gosh! What a magnificent home and mansion, wow wow wow. I love everything about it and those ceilings are like nothing like I've ever seen before! Wonderful post.

Amazing photos with lots of fabulous detail @melinda010100. It must have been so interesting to see all that incredible architecture up close. It is a very stately home but I'm sure Dawes would have happily traded it to have his son alive.

I am so certain that you are right. This is an amazing home. And I know he would have given it all up to have his boy back.
