Wednesday Walk: quiet walk in Wat Bovorn, เดินเล่นในวัดบวรนิเวศน์

Sometimes I found myself making a journey to the older part of Bangkok where I could find some quiet moment in a few old temples. My favourite temple is Wat Bovorn (the full name is Wat Bovorn-nives Vihara).

The first time I visited this wat or temple, I was attracted by the stillness and timelessness while walking around the various buildings. But what struck me most was the strong energy in the Ordination Hall (or Ubosot). I guessed most people could feel this too as they suddenly became quiet and sat down on the carpet and looked at the Buddha statues.

So, whenever I need to recharge my inner being and to ‘empty’ my busy mind, I would go straight to Wat Bovorn. I could notice the effect of the vibes there on various tourists, especially older people, who would just sit there doing nothing for up to an hour in the Ubosot (Ordination Hall).

Most old spiritual places do have very positive vibrations as a result of many years of people’s prayers and meditation. Wat Bovorn is quite special as the monks who stay there are studious monks who are adept in Buddhist scriptures and meditation. The Buddha statues in Wat Bovorn are very old and have been specially commissioned by old Siamese kings in the previous capitals of Siam, about a thousand years ago. This came as a surprise to me after doing some research on their historical background.

This temple was reconstructed by combining two old crumbling temples together into one big temple and the Ordination Hall was built by King Rama3. So, most of the highest ranking monks in this temple were mostly Royal princes. Royalties who became monks took their residence in this temple. That’s why the decorations and art works are more beautiful and grander than other ordinary temples.

The architecture of the temple is very interesting as it reflects the Chinese influences during the reign of King Rama 3; the roof of some buildings and decorations are typical Chinese temple design. During the reign of King Rama IV, the influence of Western architecture could be seen: the Georgian design of windows and high buildings. During the reign of King Rama V, more Italian and English influences became more abundant such as Italian marble, wrought iron, lamp posts and chandeliers. I seem to spot something different during each visit; I noticed English garden design with animal sculptures.

เวลาที่เรารู้สึกว่าต้องการพลังภายในเพิ่ม และรู้สึกว่าต้องการทำให้สมองโปร่งจากเรื่องยุ่งๆ เราจะไปเดินเล่นที่วัดเก่าแก่แถวๆเกาะรัตนโกสินทร์ วัดที่เราชอบไปเติมพลังมากที่สุดคือ วัดบวรนิเวศน์วรวิหารที่บางลำพู อาจจะเป็นเพราะที่วัดนี้มีพระสงฆ์ที่มีความสามารถทางด้านอภิธรรม และมีความแก่กล้าด้านการปฎิบัติสมาธิด้วย ทำให้ที่นี่มีความสงบนิ่ง ที่เรารู้สึกได้เวบาไปเดินเล่นรอบๆตึก และอาคารเก่าที่สร้างมาตั้งแต่สมัยรัชกาลที่สี่ แบะรัชกาลที่ห้า ส่วนในโบสถ์ก็มีพระพุทธรูปที่สร้างมาตั้งแต่สมัยสุโขทัย และสมัยต้นอยุธยาที่มีความศักดิ์สิทธิ์มาก เราชอบไปนั่งเงียบๆในโบสถ์เพื่อทำให้จิตสงบ มีสมาธิและรับพลังดีๆ จากพระพุทธรูปและสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่นั่น

เราไปที่นี่แต่ละครั้ง ก็สังเกตสิ่งใหม่ๆ ที่เราไม่เคยเห็นมาก่อน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการออกแบบ และการตกแต่งโบสถ์ ศิลปะที่มาจากจีน อังกฤษ อิตาลี และฝรั่งเศส และไทยด้วย เหมือนเดินอยู่ในพิพิธภัณฑ์ที่มีชีวิต วัดนี้มีอะไรให้เราเรียนรู้ตลอดเวลา น่าเสียดายที่เราไม่มีเวลาไปที่นั่นบ่อยๆ เรายีงไม่ได้เข้าไปกราบ
พระพุทธรูปทุกองค์ที่นั่นเลย และที่นั่นก็มีตำนานเรื่องเล่าเก่าแก่ที่น่าสนใจมากด้วย เราโชคดีที่ได้เจอคนเก่าแก่ที่นั่น ที่เขาดูแลวัดมานาน เมืองไทยโชคดีมากที่ยังมีที่ๆ มีพลังคุณงามความดีไว้ให้คนรุ่นต่อไป ได้มาสัมผัสในอนาคต
