So lucky to have people to prune the bamboo grove,one person got slightly injured!

Finally, I could make a confirmed appointment with my previous house’ builder to bring some people to work in the bamboo grove. It took three months before they became available as they have been building three houses for some German expats and their Thai wives! So, the weekend has been very busy and full of activities which exhausted us all at the end of the day. I had my gardener buying some Isaan food from the village market and prepared the ingredients for do-it-yourself papaya salad (Som-Tum). These north-eastern or Isaan people like very spicy food with lots of chili.

But being the last weekend of the month, these workers had to decide which lottery numbers they should buy. This caused quite a long discussion which meant that work could not begin until they had made that important phone call. Notice, they had to note down the lottery numbers and the amount of money each pledged on the bet that day. The official lottery costs from 100 to 130 baht depending on the numbers. The unofficial lottery costs much cheaper and gives higher rewards.

I did try to persuade them not to waste money on lotteries but they thought they might get lucky. This system of underground lotteries (illegal) has become our cultural norm among poor and working class people; though some rich people prefer to buy official lotteries. The news of lucky old farmers or food vendors hitting the jackpot every month made many people keep hoping that they might get lucky if they try hard enough. These people would easily spend their future wages on the lottery bets. The lottery results would be published around four o’clock in the afternoon; which was a very close shave!

In retrospect, I should not have planted so many bamboos; about twenty bamboo saplings several years ago. Nowadays they have grown very big and tall; unlike the smaller species these require lots of effort and muscle power in keeping them in order. So, we needed about five people to handle these unruly bamboos. During the first few years, we did manage to sell lots of bamboo shoots.

Some of these have sharp spikes so this could be dangerous. I found out by myself that I had to be very careful in cutting the young flexible branches as the branch could spring back to hit me! An uneasy feeling came over me and I realised I had to ask permission of the land’ spirit (or Chao-Tee in Thai) for cutting the bamboo and making so much noises. So, I stood quietly to pray and ask for the permission and protection from accidents.

About an hour later, my gardener ran to tell me that someone got injured and needed dressing for the cut. I was afraid something like this would happen as I had a premonition in the morning. That’s why I did offer some Thai sweet at the shrine in the garden while asking for no serious accident or injury. Luckily, we found the cotton wool, antiseptic lotion and some bandage. I did not see the wound until the workers came for their lunch break. I would have to get more organised with a more comprehensive medical supply for emergency. It was such a relief that he did not need to go to the hospital for some stitches though it was quite a deep cut very close to his left eye.

This was the man who got hit by the bamboo stalk while he was cutting through them. He was my favourite worker as he was always very kind and a workaholic. I was asking younger worker to help him with the heavy load but they were not very willing. I gave them minus points in my mind!

One of the lady workers like to make her own spicy papaya salad. I was glad we had bought enough food from the village; these people would never be able to eat my vegetarian food!! It was so nice seeing people eating as a team, a friendly group of warming humans. I do miss the old style Chinese family lunch gatherings I used to as a child. Most of my close relatives have gone while some just disappeared through time; this made me feel very nostalgic and sad.

สุดสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมาเรายุ่งและเหนื่อยมาก เพราะเรานัดให้ช่างที่เคยช่วยสร้างบ้านให้เราพาคนงานมาช่วยตัดต้นไผ่ในสวน กว่าจะนัดได้ก็ใช้เวลาเป็นหลายเดือน เพราะช่างมีงานสร้างบ้านให้ฝรั่งชาวเยอรมันที่แต่งงานกับคนอีสานสามครอบครัว งานดีมากเงินก็ตามมาด้วย เขาพากันมากห้าคนตอนสายๆ แต่กว่าจะเริ่มทำงานได้ก็ต้องรอให้พวกเขาตัดสินใจ ว่าจะเล่นหวยใต้ดินเลขไหนดี เราก็พึ่งเคยเห็นคนเครียดกับการช่วยกันคิดว่า งวดนี้เลขไหนจะมาแน่ เห็นเขามีกระดาษจดเลขและจำนวนเงินของนักแทงหวยแต่ละคน ท่าทางเอาจริงเอาจังเหมือนนักวิชาการเลย เราเตือนก็ไม่เขื่อว่ามีหวังว่าเจ้ามือจะรวยมากขึ้น พวกเขาก็บอกว่า เดี๋ยวรวยแล้ว ตอนนี้ขอเอาค่าแรงตอนเย็นไปแทงหวยก่อน เรามารู้เอาตอนเย็นว่าทุกคนถูกกินเรียบ แต่ก็เกือบรวย เขาซื้อ05 เพราะได้ยินมาว่างวดนี้ มีเลข0มาแน่ (ลืมถามว่าไปเอามาจากต้นไม้ที่ไหน) แต่เขาต้องเลือกเลขถัดไปเอง เขาก็เลยพากันซื้อ 04 และ05 แต่มันออก 06 ก็เลยพากันโอดครวญ ตกลงเป็นอันเสียค่าแรงให้เจ้ามือไปแล้ว

เราไม่น่าปลูกไผ่พันธ์ใหญ่มากถึง 20กอ เราน่าจะปลูกแค่สิบกอและ ปลูกไผ่เลี้ยงธรรมดาสัก10กอ ไผ่ตงลืมแล้งนี่ต้องใช้พลังงานและความแข็งแรง ในการจัดการมาก ไม่เหมือนไผ่เลี้ยงที่ทุกคนสามารถตัดได้ง่ายกว่ามาก เราพึ่งรู้ว่าการตัดต้นไผ่ต้องระวังอย่างมาก เพราะกิ่งไผ่สามารถดีดกลับมาใส่หน้าเราได้ เรามีบางบอกเหตุบางอย่างตอนเช้า เราจึงไปถวายขนมหวานเจ้าที่และขอให้คุ้มครองคนที่มาข่วยตัดต้นไผ่ด้วย และขออย่าให้มีอุบัติเหตุใดๆ พอคนงานช่วยกันตัดไผ่ไปสักพัก คนสวนก็มาตะโกนขอยาทำแผล มีคนโดนต้นไผ่บาดเพราะมันดีดกลับมาหาคนตัด เราใจเสียเลย ต้องรีบหาสำลีและยาแดง และที่ปิดแผลให้ไปกับคนงาน เราถามว่าต้องไปเย็บที่โรงพยาบาลไหม คนงานตะโกนบอกว่าเขาเอานํ้าแข็งหยุดเลือดแล้ว เราก็ภาวนาให้แผลอย่าลึกมาก เราได้เห็นแผลตอนเขามากินอาหารกลางวันกัน แผลใกล้ตาข้างซ้ายมาก ค่อนข้างลึกแต่บาดแผลปิดแล้ว ข้างในยังไม่สมานกันสนิท แผลมีความร้อนมาก เราสั่งห้ามโดนนํ้าเด็ดขาดสามวัน เขาขอยาแก้ปวดตอนบ่าย บอกว่าปวดหัวและปวดแผลมาก เราก็สุดจะคิดว่า มียาแก้ปวดในบ้านหรือเปล่า เราไม่ค่อยชอบกินยาเลย แต่โชคดีไปเจอยาแก้ปวดและลดอาการอับเสบจากการทำฟัน ยาเก่าแล้วแต่ยังไม่เปลี่ยนสีและเก็บในที่แห้ง สารเคมียังคงสภาพแต่อาจทำงานไม่เต็มที่ ปรากฎว่ายาที่ให้เขากินได้ผลดีมาก เราต้องจัดการทำตู้ยาดีๆสักกล่องได้แล้วกระมัง เราตุนยาไว้หลายขนิดแต่ยังไม่ได้เอามาจากกรุงเทพฯ

เราให้คนสวนซื้ออาหารมาจากที่ตลาดในหมู่บ้าน มาเลี้ยงข้าวเที่ยงคนงาน และมีส้มตำให้จัดการตำกินกันเองด้วย เราชอบเห็นคนกินข้าวล้อมวงกัน ทำให้คิดถึงสมัยเด็กๆที่ญาติคนจีนชอบล้อมวงกินอาหารกันอย่างอบอุ่นสนุกสนาน ญาติเราก็หายจากกันไปเกือบหมดแล้ว บางคนก็ย้ายบ้านออกไปจากเขตเมืองจนขาดการติดต่อ เราจึงแทบไม่มีญาติผู้ใหญ่เหลือเลย

I was very glad that the worker’s wound got healed quite fast. I gave him some pills for the pain and told him to visit the nearest drug store on his way home. These workers did a good job but they’ll have to come back again in two weeks’ time to finish their job. The purpose of growing bamboos is to keep the land free from thick wild grasses and shrubs and snakes. But I will have to get rid of some bamboo clusters in the future. Now there is more sunlight reaching the ground after the hard pruning. So much work around the garden still waits our attention.
