Seeking comfort from clean, cheap and friendly street food stalls, ไปหาของกินที่สะอาด ราคาถูกและเป็นมิตร

This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by the kind and compassionate @dswigle. Sometimes I feel disorientated from being within my mind too much, so I need to go out and get in touch with physical 3D reality. Reading and working in front of computers most of the time often drown my perception with virtual reality.

I don’t know if you could see the base of this table; it was made from an old Singer sewing machine.

I told them that I was going to write a post on them so they were so happy to let me take their photos. They are simple and nice hard-working people with genuine smile and kindness. I could never have such friendly interactions with staff in expensive and high-end restaurants.

My remedy is to get on a small local bus which goes through all the very small narrow lanes which buses could not reach. Along these lanes are old houses belonging to people whose ancestors have been living there for at least three generations. I could see a sense of history and continuity of human relationships and endeavors through many ups and downs. These people know each other by their first names and the atmosphere of these old shop-houses is very much like a small village.

This is my favourite Chinese dessert; soft steamed grounded soya bean which would be dished into a bowl with a bit of brown sugar and lots of hot ginger water. This is excellent for people suffering from a cold and sore throat. The lady owner was preparing a take-
home order.

Many families are good at cooking so some families would set up food stalls while some offer traditional Chinese sweets. Some families would set up a grocery store selling essential household goods like soaps and brushes,etc. I often take an evening walk along old narrow roads to observe the old way of living community which will perish in the future as real estate developers come in to buy up these old houses. Then, in a few year tall condominiums would rise up with isolated and independent style of living. Cheap, clean and friendly street food stalls and shop-houses would be gone forever. The modern and ‘mind your own business’ culture will be the norm.

I found more than ten food stalls on this narrow lane with several elderly ladies selling street food and sweets. The atmosphere was very friendly and people were so polite with amazingly good manner. Normally I would not expect people with minimum education and less social acumens to score high points on etiquette. They were simply very good natured, passive and considerate people. It was very refreshing for me to interact with these kind vendors; they allowed me to take many photos.

บางครั้งเรารู้สึกว่าตัวเองอยู่ในโลกเสมือนจริงมากเกินไป เพราะเราอ่านข้อมูลและบทความทางอินเตอร์เน็ตวันละหลายชั่วโมง ทำให้รู้ว่าเราเหมือนถูกตัดขาดจากโลกมนุษย์ เราต้องรีบออกไปอยู่กับโลกแห่งความจริงทางกายภาพทันทีก่อนจะหลุดโลกไป เราก็จะขึ้นรถเมล์ หรือไม่ก็ไปเที่ยวทางเรือ แต่เราชอบหารถเมล์เล็กที่แล่นไปตามถนนที่มีชุมชนดั้งเดิม เพื่อสัมผัสกับอดีตความเป็นมาของผู้คนที่อาศัยที่นั่น เราชอบนั่งรถเมล์เล็กไปตามถนนเจริญกรุง ที่มีทางแยกเข้าถนนแคบๆที่รถเมล์ปกติจะเข้าไปไม่ได้ คนที่อยู่ตามตึกแถวสองชั้นที่สร้างในสมัยรัชกาลที่5 จะอยู่กันสามถึงสี่ชั่วอายุคน เขาจึงรู้จักกันทั้งถนนคล้ายกับอยู่ในหมู่บ้านเล็กๆ

เราชอบไปเดินดูแผงขายอาหารและขนมไทยจีนที่คนในครอบครัวที่ฝีมือทำออกมาขาย เราชอบความสะอาดและราคาถูกของอาหารพวกนี้ ชอบที่ได้เห็นเขาทำให้เห็น เราไม่ค่อยชอบร้านอาหารที่ทำครัวหลังบ้าน หรือในห้างใหญ่ๆ เพราะเราเคยแอบไปดูในห้องครัวหลายแห่ง ทำให้กินอาหารไม่ลงเลย ครัวเลอะเทอะ สกปรกและไม่เป็นระเบียบ เราเลยมีความรูสึกหลอนตั้งแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา

This is the best Padthai in the area! Very cheap and clean; the lady vendor was very friendly and followed all my request for not adding white sugar, no MSG, more bean sprouts as I didn’t like raw bean sprouts! The prawns were also very big and fresh. She told me that she had anxiety as there were less customers. She could survive because of her regular customers. I told her that customers would come in waves and she gave me a big smile. I did feel the plight of uncertainty among these simple kind people. I wished I could have made their lives a bit less stressful. I will certainly pass by that way again soon.

ถ้าได้เห็นเขาล้างผักล้างจาน และทำอาหารต่อหน้า เราจะรู้สึกสบายใจกว่า เราก็ไปเจอชุมชนเล็กๆแถวถนนจันทน์สะพาน3 ในซอยเล็กๆมีร้านอาหารมีฝีมือมากกว่าสิบอย่าง แถมมีร้านขนมไทยจีนที่เต็มที่กับส่วนประกอบ และตักให้แบบไม่กลัวขาดทุน คนที่ทำขายก็เป็นคนในชุมชนที่อยู่มานานห้าสิบกว่าปี เขาจะมาทำอาหารขายกันเป็นทีมพี่น้องในครอบครัว ตลอดจนคุณยายอายุเจ็ดสิบกว่าก็ยังทำขนมขาย

I must go back for this old Chinese snack called Jui-kluoag, made of steamed rice flour and topped with cooked pickled vegetables! Only the old people would be making this snack as young people’d rather go working in companies with big salaries. These older generation of Chinese people have no social security as they were never qualified for working in companies or public sector. They have to sell food and sweets to earn their living. At least they have cooking skills and don’t have to become beggars like some poor old farmers.

เราเจอร้านผัดไทยที่ดีมาก สดและอร่อยบวกกับเจ้าของร้านใจดีมาก กุ้งสดตัวใหญ่และให้หลายตัว คนขายก็คุยกับเราอย่างสุภาพและบอกเราว่ามีความกังวลมากขึ้น เพราะลูกค้าไม่มากเหมือนแต่ก่อน ที่อยู่ได้เพราะมีลูกค้าประจำบ้าง เราสังเกตเห็นคนที่ขายอาหารส่วนใหญ่มีอายุเลยหกสิบปี คนจีนรุ่นเก่าเหล่านี้ไม่มีความรู้พอที่จะไปทำงานตามบริษัทหรือรับราชการ ทำให้ไม่มีเงินบำเหน็จบำนาญ หรือเงินประกันสังคม เขาจึงต้องทำอาหารเพื่อขายเลี้ยงชีพไปจนแก่เฒ่า เราคงจะต้องกลับไปอุดหนุนร้านอาหารและขนมที่นี่อีก เราอยากช่วยให้เขามีการค้าขายที่คล่องมากขึ้น อย่างน้อยเขามีบ้านอยู่และมีความรู้ในการประกอบอาชีพ ไม่ต้องมาเป็นขอทานเหมือนชาวนาบางคน

There was a Chinese lady of over seventy years old who made very delicious traditional Thai sweets. I wondered why a typical Chinese knew these Thai recipes. She told me that she helped her mother made these sweets since she was a little girl. These are very simple Thai sweets dating back over a hundred years.

This lady’sweet stall sits right in front of a simple barber shop!

Very healthy Thai sweets made from rice flour, coconut milk, coconut sugar, steamed banana and grated coconut. I love all of these and could never have enough of them; so I must have been an old soul!

Along the main road there are other Thai and Chinese desserts which means I really have to get back to that street food community in the near future!
