Black and White Photography: Hua Lamphong Railway Station, สถานีรถไฟหัวลำโพง

This is my entry for #thaiphotocontest38 on black and white photography. Last week I had to go to the railway station to pick up my rail tickets. So, I had the rare opportunity of taking some photos during daytime.

The old name of the railway station is Hua Lamphong which is the name I have been accustomed to since childhood. The railway station was built by King Rama V over a hundred years ago. There used to be an underground bunker built during WW II for people to hide away from the Allied air raid! Siam was under Japanese occupation hence it became a frequent targets of air raids. My deceased ancesters used to tell me stories about their lucky escape from bombing while witnessing other poor people got killed by exploding bombs.

The buildings and railways were designed and built by the British engineers. Siam was the first country to have a railway system in south-east Asia. Unfortunately, the whole infrastructure has not been maintained not improved with changes in time and technology. Thai railway has been accumulating a large sum of debts which is still an obstacle in building an efficient and modern rail network. This reminds me of the problem of British Rail in which its privatisation failed miseraby and the British government had to denationalised British Rail. Thai Railway will become a heaven for asset striping and corruptions during privatisation. I hope and pray that privatisation would never take place.

สองสัปดาห์ก่อนเราต้องไปซื้อตั๋วรถไฟที่สถานี เราจึงมีโอกาสถ่ายรูปสถานีรถไฟหัวลำโพงในเวลากลางวัน สมัยก่อนที่หน้าสถานีมีหลุมหลบภัย จากการทิ้งระเบิดของฝ่ายพันธมิตร เพราะตอนนั้นญี่ปุ่นยึดเมืองไทยได้ ไทยเลยตกกระไดพลอยโจร เป็นเป้าการโจมตีจากเครื่องบินด้วย เราชอบใช้ชื่อเก่าดั้งเดิมของสถานี หัวลำโพง แต่มีคนหัวใสไปเปลี่ยนเป็นสถานีกรุงเทพ ทำให้ค่อนข้างสับสนเพราะว่าไปซํ้ากับชื่อเมือง เราไม่เคยได้ยินฝรั่งเรียกชื่อสถานีวอเตอร์ลูในเมืองลอนดอนว่าสถานีลอนดอน!

สยามเป็นประเทศแรกในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ที่มีการสร้างระบบการเดินรถไฟ สมัยก่อนคนมาเลย์ต้องมาดูงานการรถไฟแห่งประเทศไทย แต่กาลเวลาเปลี่ยนไป พัฒนาการของการรถไฟกลับเสื่อมถอยตามเวลาที่ผ่านไป และมีสภาพที่แย่มาก สถานะการเงินก็แย่มากเพราะ มีหนี้สินมหาศาล ปัจจุบันเพื่อนบ้านแซงหน้าเราไปหมดแล้ว รถไฟใหม่ก็มีข้อกังขาถึงจุดอ่อนมากมาย ในการกำหนดแบบและความต้องการในการใช้งาน เราคิดว่าคงเป็นการตั้งใจทำให้ไม่ดีมากๆ เพื่อจะได้พลักดันให้แปรรูปรัฐวิสาหกิจ เพื่อทำกำไรงามๆ จากการขายที่ของการรถไฟที่มีอยู่ทั่วประเทศ โดยบริษัทเอกชนที่มาประมูลใน ราคาถูกๆโดยอ้างว่ามีหนี้มาก และขาดทุนยับเยิน โครงการนี้จะเป็นโครงการสำหรับการคอรัปชั่นอย่างหอมหวาน ระหว่างคนในและคนนอก ส่วนประชาชนก็ต้องรับกรรมจ่ายค่าเดินทางแพงขึ้นอีกเท่าตัว
