Coronado California Food (sort of) MyCalifornia Contest Entry

My California was Coronado for most of the time I lived there. I moved there and rarely left for 20 years. Then I moved over the bridge and did not go back.

Since I am a food blog, this essay is a bit about the food in town and when I say "a bit" I mean it.

Here is the Union 76 gas station I used to hang out at.

Here's Ray wondering if I am really going to take more photos there in the middle of the night.

Yes, I am.

They had not one healthy thing to eat here in this big gas station store and were not going to get any for me.

It was a photogenic place though.

Village Theater is one of the landmarks in town. I don't watch movies and in 20 years, I never once stepped foot in there, but I have hundreds of photos of the signs. (@janton)

This photo was taken in March; on a school day, and in the middle of the day. I do not know what was up with these two kids, but they were having fun.

The oils and vinegar behind them are branded with "Coronado." They are an outrageously priced delicacy to take home to your friends.

In the next shot, you can just barely see Panera Bread behind the "Smile" car. Panera is pretty good for healthy choices of food. They are not too expensive and taste very good.

Below is local character Joe Ditler looking out to sea in the Coronado Brewing Company promo vehicle he used to have. His son Jack was in my house almost continually for maybe 10 years.

I had the hangout place and @bxlphabet and his friends silently played Pokemon on gameboy for hours and hours and hours on end.

The Brewing Co is highly recommended for taste and just forget about the diet for that day.

I ate there a lot before losing "half my size" and then never again afterwards.

The Spirit of San Diego is a tour boat by day and a restaurant by night. They had very good food and it was worth the splurge. They cook your meal in the galley on board. After working for this company for many years, I can tell you to ask this question of the boat you are going to eat on:

"Do you cook on board?"

If they say no, take a pass. Who knows where they are catering from, how long it takes to get there, and it's just too bad if there is a problem with your food because you are on a boat now and help is not coming.

The dough machine at Alexanders Pizza is only a memory now, and all of Coronado mourns. We lost this place to high rent in town and everyone misses it.

As for pizza you do not make yourself, get it at a small local place once in a while, and you should be fine if you do not go overboard. The big chains are not your friend for healthy food.

I do not even know where this next sign was. But I guess you could have gotten free beer and wine at one time over there. I'm pretty sure this means you get a tiny cup and then need to buy more after that.

This is the outdoor dining at Swaddee Thai, where I ate 1000 times over the years. Great food with high prices.

Satay Chicken

Expensive Thai iced tea @bxlphabet can suck back in 3 seconds. The Karate studio he trained at was next door, so we were here continually for years.

The bench in the background was mine for many meals.

So pretty there before lunch one day. Such lovely flowers!

And here is me baking bread in one of my first tries ever.

For US bread - get the organic or don't get it. The chemicals in the regular bread are the very worst of the worst for toxic effects.

A common question in clean eating groups is:

Why does the bread aisle smell so bad?

Answer: It has smelled that bad for many years. But when you were eating those chemicals you could not smell them.

Ew.

UPDATE: I am so happy and relieved to tell you that:

• my rent and a wifi top up have been paid.
